  1. News just broke that Zack Snyder has been chosen as director for the new Superman movie (yes, the same one being produced by Christopher Nolan). Zack Snyder as Superman Director on /film Weirdness
  2. I had the pleasure to watch this 2003 Korean thriller on DVD the other day. VERY well acted, VERY powerful. The lead actor is simply astounding. The direction is confident and assured. This is now one of my favorite movies. I need to go find and watch the director's other movies now. My personal feeling is that you should go into this movie knowing at little as possible. Don't google it, don't do any searches on any boards, just try and find it and go watch it if you can. My feeling is that sometimes a lot of the specialness of a movie gets lost by hype, too much information, and people's enthusiasm, setting unfair expectations. That said, here's a MINI-MINI-synopsis for anyone curious for just a little taste of the story. Again, I think that the less you know going in, the better: A man is kidnapped and imprisoned in a room against his will for 15 years. He gets out and immediately sets out for revenge while searching for the answers 1) Who did this? and 2) Why? The Doctor's prescription - Highly Recommended. 5 out of 5 pills.
  3. Coming to Blu-ray and DVD on February 4, 2014 is Justice League: War, a retelling of the formation of DC Comics' famed superhero team based on Justice League Vol. 1: Origin by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee, from The New 52. The animated film features the voices of Alan Tudyk (Steve the Pirate in DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story, Shipwreck in The Ballad of G.I. Joe) as Superman, Jason O'Mara (Wesker in Resident Evil: Extinction, Sam Tyler in Life on Mars) as Batman, Justin Kirk (Andy in Weeds) as Green Lantern, Michelle Monaghan (Julia in Mission: Impossible III and Ghost Protocol) as Wonder Woman, Christopher Gorham (Henry in Ugly Betty) as The Flash, Shemar Moore (Derek in Criminal Minds) as Cyborg, Sean Astin (Samwise in The Lord of the Rings, Mikey in The Goonies) as Shazam, and Steven Blum (Marj in Macross Plus, Major Nexx in Macross II) as Darkseid.
  4. For the first time ever, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger share top-billing in one movie. Escape Plan has them both trying to figure out how to break out of the world's most secure prison. The film premiered at the San Diego Comic-Con on July 18 and in the Philippines on October 9; it opens on October 18 in the U.S. Official Site
  5. Travelers: Jigen Keisatsu (トラベラーズ 次元警察) is an upcoming low-budget Japanese sci-fi film starring three of the hottest tokusatsu actresses: Nao Nagasawa (Nanami Nono/Hurricane Blue in Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger) as Ai Ayumi Kinoshita (Marika "Jasmine" Reimon/Deka Yellow in Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger) as Yui Yuko Takayama (Rinko Daimon in Kamen Rider Wizard) as Haruka Not much is known about this film, but it hits theaters in Japan on April 13. 6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6h7auwGiK4 Excalibur Orion Pictures/Warner Bros., 1981 Directed by John Boorman (Zardoz, Exorcist II: The Heretic) Screenplay by Rospo Pallenberg (Exorcist II: The Heretic, The Emerald Forest) and John Boorman Based on Le Morte d'Arthur by Sir Thomas Mallory Running Time: 140 minutes Rated R for graphic violence, nudity, sexual situations, suggestive incest and mild language. "Behold! The Sword of Power! Excalibur! Forged when the world was young, and bird and beast and flower were one with man, and death was but a dream!" - Merlin Cast - Nigel Terry (Archeptolemus in Troy) as King Arthur - Nicholas Clay (1946-2000) as Lancelot - Cherie Lunghi (Victor's mother in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein) as Guinevere - Nicol Williamson (Cogliostro in Spawn) as Merlin - Helen Mirren (Victoria in Red 1-2, Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen) as Morgana - Paul Geoffrey as Perceval - Robert Addie (1960-2003) as Mordred - Gabriel Byrne (Dean Keaton in The Usual Suspects) as Uther Pendragon - Keith Buckley as Uryens - Katryne Boorman as Igrayne - Liam Neeson* as Gawain - Corin Redgrave as Cornwall - Patrick Stewart* as Leondegrance - Charley Boorman as young Mordred - Barbara Bryne as young Morgana - Telsche Boorman (1957-1997) as the Lady of the Lake *If you don't know these guys, you must've been living under a rock for the past decade. "Any man who would be a knight and follow a king... follow me." - King Arthur Synopsis Forged by a God. Foretold by a wizard. Found by a man. That was the great sword Excalibur, which symbolized power over one nation to whoever wielded it. Excalibur was first handed to the ruthless knight Uther Pendragon, who abused his leadership privileges and Merlin's sorcery to betray his comrade Cornwall and steal his wife Igrayne for one night. Nine moons after Cornwall's "accidental" death, Igrayne gave birth to Uther's illegitimate son, who was then taken away by Merlin as part of Uther's deal with him. Before his untimely death at the hands of enemy forces, Uther impaled Excalibur through a stone, vowing that the one who succeeds in drawing out the sword will rule England. Many years later, a young man named Arthur surprises the whole of England by successfully drawing Excalibur out of the stone, immediately granting him the title of King. Using his newly-acquired leadership characteristics and his sword, Arthur establishes the great court of Camelot and assembles the land's greatest warriors to form the Knights of the Round Table. But with glory comes despair, as his wife Guinevere betrays him by having an affair with his best knight Lancelot. Arthur's half-sister Morgana plots her revenge on him and Merlin by seducing him and giving birth to the bastard child Mordred. And Arthur's quest to acquire the Holy Grail has proven to be disastrous with many of his knights perishing halfway through the perilous journey. Can King Arthur and Excalibur still reign throughout these ordeals? "Now, once more, I must ride with my knights to defend what was, and the dream of what could be." - King Arthur Lowdown So why did I bring up this classic film? Seeing that a new King Arthur movie is premiering next week, I once again ask, "What's the whole point of making another King Arthur movie when we already have Excalibur?" First Knight was a complete snooze-fest while the animated film The Quest for Camelot was no better. They all should've learned from director John Boorman and his 1981 masterpiece. Despite its rather adult atmosphere, Excalibur boasts the best acting and cinematography compared to the later adaptations. Solid performances by the predominantly Shakesperean cast (and some of Boorman's family members) give life to Sir Thomas Mallory's epic with a score of memorable lines and excellent character development. The special effects are also nothing short of breathtaking. Perhaps one of the biggest highlights of the movie is its soundtrack. Trevor Jones' (Time Bandits, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) original score is excellent on its own, along with excerpts from Richard Wagner's classical pieces. But what stands out and completely defines the film is "Oh Fortuna", from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. As a matter of fact, after the release of Excalibur, "Oh Fortuna" has been the most widely used classical piece on TV, radio and film. If you haven't seen Excalibur yet, you owe it to yourself to rent buy the DVD. It sure beats coughing out $8 to see another potentially lousy King Arthur adaptation. Other than that, pick up Monty Python and the Holy Grail as well. Rating: A Reference The Internet Movie Database
  7. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTgs9rwrxMg Robot & Frank Park Pictures/Stage 6 Films/Samuel Goldwyn Films, 2012 Directed by Jake Schreier Written by Christopher D. Ford Running Time: 89 minutes Rated PG-13 for profanity. Cast Frank Langella (Skeletor in Masters of the Universe, Jaro Essa in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) as Frank Weld Peter Sarsgaard (Hector in Green Lantern, Cpl. Troy in Jarhead) as Robot (voice) Rachel Ma as Robot (body) Susan Sarandon (Janet in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Louise in Thelma & Louise) as Jennifer James Marsden (Scott/Cyclops in X-Men, Richard White in Superman Returns) as Hunter Weld Liv Tyler (Grace in Armageddon, Betty Ross in The Incredible Hulk) as Madison Weld Jeremy Strong as Jake Jeremy Sisto (Billy in Six Feet Under, Bruce Wayne/Batman in Justice League: The New Frontier) as Sheriff Rowlings Katherine Waterson as the Shop girl Synopsis Frank Weld is a retired cat burglar living in a quiet upstate New York town. Aside from dealing with the technological changes occurring in his town, he has to cope with rapid memory deterioration and dementia. As a means of therapeutic care, Frank's son Hunter purchases him a robot to do the daily chores and maintain his well-being. At first, Frank does not get along with the robot, but when he discovers the robot's inability to distinguish right from wrong, he programs it to pick locks and crack safes to get back into the old game of burglary. Lowdown It's amazing how someone can tell a very good sci-fi story without breaking the bank or resorting to excessive CG effects. Done on a meager budget of US$2.5 million, Robot & Frank is a lighthearted tale that relies only on storytelling and a solid performance by Frank Langella. Of course, it also helps that Susan Sarandon is in it too. Despite looking like a cheap ASIMO knockoff, the robot is a very convincing performer on-screen. Hollywood should really learn from this film, as it beats about anything 100 times its budget. Rating: A References The Internet Movie Database
  8. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-24372224 That's a darkness day... Rest in Peace Tom.
  9. This Is the End was originally released on June 12 and was met with critical acclaim, with fans and critics calling it the best comedy of Summer 2013 (at least for those who didn't watch The World's End). Directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the film is a remake of the 2007 short film Jay and Seth Versus the Apocalypse. The film stars Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson, along with a whole bunch of other actors, as they must deal with the apocalypse outside James Franco's house. And for those who missed out on the release, Sony Pictures brought it back in theaters on September 6. The rest of the world gets to see it for the first time starting this week. Due to the success of the film, a sequel is in the works. Official Site
  10. Prisoners is a suspense-drama film directed by Denis Villeneuve, starring Hugh Jackman (like no one here knows who he is...), Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko, Colter in Source Code), Terrence Howard (James Rhodes in Iron Man, Djay in Hustle & Flow), Viola Davis (Maj. Anderson in Enders Game), Maria Bello (Edie in A History of Violence, Evelyn in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor), Melissa Leo (Alice in The Fighter), and Paul Dano (Seth in Looper). In this film, two families' daughters disappear on Thanksgiving night, with the only clue being a run-down RV they were last seen playing around. When police apprehend the RV's owner, the case is thrown out due to no evidence found in the vehicle and the driver having an I.Q. of a 10-year-old. Jackman is pissed, so he takes matters into his own hands and abducts the driver to find the truth about the missing children. The film opened in the U.S. on September 20 at #1 on the box-office. Reviews have been mostly positive (79% on Rotten Tomatoes), with some independent critics comparing the plot to The Dark Knight. There's also been some speculation that Jackman and Gyllenhaal could receive Oscar nominations for their performances. Official Site
  11. Ok someone watched Alien & Prometheus and then went to Mars with a slightly lower budget... The Hardware looks good, though. But the trailer already has more worn tropes than you can shake a flamethrower at.

  16. So, anyone else planning to see this movie? I just got back from it and it was awesome, especially the titanic ending twist!
  17. The Armour of God saga continues with Chinese Zodiac. Jackie Chan reprises his role as the treasure hunter Asian Hawk, as he begins his quest to take back 12 bronze animal heads of the Chinese zodiac that were looted during the Second Opium War. Chinese Zodiac premieres in Hong Kong on December 12. Official Site
  18. We got a trailer now for Arnold's new movie. Check it out: http://www.slashfilm.com/the-last-stand-trailer-arnold-schwarzenegger-gets-a-second-chance/ I've seen Kim Ji-Woon's "I Saw The Devil" which was brilliant and a great last hurrah for the Korean revenge thriller genre that has made such an impression this past decade. If he brings even half of what he did in that film to a Schwarzenegger movie, this could be a lot of fun.
  19. Imaginaerum Caramel Films/Solar Films/Scene Nation, 2012 Directed by Stobe Harju Written by Stobe Harju and Tuomas Holopainen Based on the album Imaginaerum by Nightwish Running Time: 85 minutes Not Rated (suggested R). Contains graphic violence and strong language. Cast Quinn Lord (Student in The Possession) as Thomas Whitman, age 10 Francis-Xavier McCarthy as Thomas Whitman, age 75 Marianne Farley as Gem Whitman, age 35 Joanna Noyes as Ann, age 73 Elias Toufexis as Mr. White (voice) Keyanna Fielding as Gem Whitman, age 7 Victoria Ann Jung as Ann, age 8 Ilkka Villi as Theodore Whitman and Mr. White Roy Lea as Dr. JanssonStephane Demere as the Twisted Toy Soldier Hélène Robitaille as Arabesque "Miracles come in small packages. It takes so little to turn a child into the most fortunate being in the world." Nightwish Tuomas Holopainen (keyboardist) as Thomas Whitman, ages 34 and 47 Anette Olzon (lead vocalist, 2005-2012) as Ann, age 32 Marco Hietala (bassist) as Marcus Emppu Vuorinen (guitarist) as Emil Jukka Nevalainen (drummer) as Jack Troy Donockley (uilleann piper) as the Magician Synopsis Thomas Whitman is a 75-year-old man who has lapsed into a coma as a result of dementia. As he is clinging to his life while his estranged daughter Gem plans to pull the plug on him, his mind is in a fantasy world where he relives his childhood past and tries to come to terms with his past while facing his inner demon in the form of a snowman called "Mr. White". Lowdown It's not very often that a music artist ventures to make a movie out of their own works; and those that do have varying levels of success. The Beatles' Yellow Submarine was a critical success while the KISS TV film KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park is widely regarded as one of the worst movies ever made. And then we have the symphonic metal band Nightwish, Finland's most successful music act today. As majority of their albums are "concept albums" with songs sharing a common theme, it would be hard not to imagine a few movies or stage plays made out of them. For their 2011 album Imaginaerum, that's exactly what they set their sights on. The songs from the album are vividly created on the big screen, from the bluesy to the climactic "Last Ride of the Day" roller coaster ride scene. The story borrows plenty of elements from Tim Burton films and other movies about dreams and imagination, and it plays very well - making a lot more sense than Sucker Punch.Produced at a modest budget of US$3.7 million, the Imaginaerum film has the acting quality of a typical made-for-TV special, but the special effects and cinematography are surprisingly amazing. Much like Iron Sky (another movie from Finland), a lot of the CG effects in this film look like they were done on a larger budget than you think. Many of the costumes and props look cheap and cheesy, but they're supposed to be, as a dream world has infinite degrees of surrealism. The soundtrack consists of a breathtaking orchestral score by Petri Alanko, based on the album's songs. As for the band themselves, their performances in the film are minimal, as keyboardist/leader Tuomas Holopainen acts out several non-speaking roles of Thomas Whitman in his 30s and 40s while the other members are simply band members in the background. Overall, Imaginaerum is a fun ride, whether or not you're into Nightwish and their music. The acting may not be the best, but the visual effects are worth the rental.
