I thought that Since we seemed to lack a general Mecha discussion thread, I'd start one. Questions, Comments, Debates, whatever could go here. It would be really fantastic if this could get pinned, but I'll let the mods decide. Or they could decide that I'm just asinine and delete this thread. I hope not... So to kick it off I'll toss a Question out there: What is the best Variable fighter in Macross? I say the VF-11. It looks cool, Probably has the longest service life of any VF in universe and has been flown by more hero characters than any other (I think, I know that M&M flew the prototype, and also first run production models probably, Isamu, Kinryu, Ray Lovelock, Gamlin, and Mylene all flew variants of the VF-11). What say you? -

Train to Busan (부산행) proved that South Korea can make a better zombie flick than World War Z. Sure, its US$99 million worldwide box office gross is meager compared to Hollywood films, but it's become the highest-grossing Asian film in Hong Kong and most of Southeast Asia. It's received praise from film critics worldwide. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the latest film in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter universe, taking place over 70 years before Harry Potter and the Philosopher's (Sorcerer's) Stone. Directed by David Yates (Harry Potter 5-8, The Legend of Tarzan) and marking Rowling's screenwriting debut, the film stars Eddie Redmayne (Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, Balem in Jupiter Ascending) as the wizard Newt Scamander. The film opens today, and it's already received good reviews. Four more sequels are already in the works. Twenty years ago, French director Luc Besson (Nikita, Leon: The Professional) gave us The Fifth Element, which was actually a good sci-fi film not made in Hollywood. On July 21, 2017, he'll give us Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, a theatrical adaptation of the popular French sci-fi comic book series Valérian and Laureline (which was one of the inspirations for The Fifth Element). The film stars Dane DeHaan (Andrew in Chronicle, Harry Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2), Carla Delevingne (Enchantress in Suicide Squad), Clive Owen (Dwight in Sin City, Mr. Smith in Shoot 'Em Up), Rihanna (overrated pop singer who helped sink Battleship), Kris Wu (some Chinese singer, as these films must somehow appeal to the Chinese market), John Goodman (Hound in Transformers: Age of Extinction, Fred in The Flintstones), Ethan Hawke (Vincent/Jerome in Gattaca, Jesse in Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight), and Rutger Hauer (Roy Batty in Blade Runner, Cardinal Roark in Sin City). Another Smurfs movie? Sony Pictures Animation promises that Smurfs: The Lost Village is a reboot and completely unrelated to the disastrous live-action films. Don't Breathe is a horror/suspense film produced by Sam Raimi (the Evil Dead series, the Spider-Man trilogy) and directed by Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead [2013], From Dusk till Dawn: The Series), starring Jane Levy (Mia in Evil Dead [2013], Tessa in Suburgatory), Stephen Lang (Quaritch in Avatar, most likely to be Cable in an X-Force movie), Dylan Minnette (Clay in Saving Grace, Rex in Awake), and Daniel Zovatto (Seth in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Gideon in Revenge). The film centers on three people breaking into the home of a blind war veteran to steal US$300,000 from him, only to learn the hard way that he doesn't take kindly to intruders. The film opened on August 26 and is receiving rave reviews. Arrival is the latest film by director Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Sicario), starring Amy Adams (Brenda in Catch Me If You Can, Mary in The Muppets), Jeremy Renner (Hansel in Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Aaron Cross in The Bourne Legacy), and Forest Whitaker (Charles in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Ker in Battlefield Earth). Based on Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang, it is a sci-fi film about the arrival of an alien ship and mankind's attempt to communicate with it. The film will make its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 2 before hitting theaters on November 11.
