  5. On 12 May 2014, VF25-F and I were given the opportunity to get an interview with May'n, the Galactic Fairy in Singapore. We attach herewith the excerpts of our interview with May'n and a report on her "Dots and Lines" concert !!! Please see attached files below !!! 6. Hey guys, returning after a long hiatus. Quick question, I remember back in the day the Animeigo version of SDF Macross was THE version to get, however in my cash strapped student days that was a difficult pill to swallow. These days the Animeigo version is out of print. Is there anything comparable on the market now? I've heard the ADV version is... not as good.
  7. I wonder if I'm the only one to feel that Ranka's story at the end of the TV series is far from complete. Alto and Sheryl are both adults and we have learned much about them including family traditions and we know their ultimate choices in their fate. Well, except the triangle part - one can reference the movies for that one though. In any event, at least apart from love life, each of them clearly knows who he/she is and what he/she wants and lives for. Ranka has just spent something like 8 episodes being heavily pounded and surviving against all odds - and her emotional life in that period clearly was not her own. By the time she decided to confess to Alto, she was getting emotional feedback from a big Vajra network - of which some members were being killed around her. And she did not know about the feedback. The feelings raging within her were not of her own origin and quite out of her control - all she could do was direct them at Alto (and possibly to a degree Sheryl, depending on how one reads some clues). As this sort of feedback was gradually erasing her, Grace guilt-tripped her and we know what happened. Yes, she fought her way out of it heroically, and now the Vajra are gone. Ranka is left with: - A drained emotional life that was driven by forces external to herself, and to humanity, for whatever number of weeks, and she just started to take it back ("I will not stop singing nor loving" is a start, but only a start). - A double-whammy feeling of guilt - not only does she feel responsible for the destruction of the 117th fleet but now she was a tool that nearly wiped out humanity and got a lot of pilots killed (and she probably knew some of those killed, by sheer demographic) - On the plus side, some very good friends (Sheryl doubles as a mentor), an excellent track to a galactic singing career (they'll be shortly making a quartz fold drive, too, so she can have a gigs on Earth and around colonies easily), and a manager to match. Oh, and a real brother who can kick a lot of ass. These, however, are all things somewhat external to herself and not resolving the great deal of internal turmoil she is still facing. And all we know of her background is a brief glimpse of her mother... The movies sidestep the issues instead of resolving them. In the movies she never "changed sides", instead she had a "take me ant leave Frontier alone" moment. So in the movies she does not face massive guilt, and she can identify fully with the people of Frontier even when she loses Alto and sees Sheryl in a coma - giving her a clear sense of identity and direction. That's clearly a different story (perhaps the movies are the story as told by the two singers quite a few years after the fact? it also leaves very little rivalry in there and has them as BFFs from first sight - consistent with them telling it after many years of being BFFs). So on the series Ranka... I actually think Alto belongs with Sheryl (not here to debate that) but at the same time would want 10 more episodes of Ranka, to see her actually finding the real herself after all she went through, and perhaps discovering more of her background in the process. Guess this makes me a bad Sheryl fan AND a bad Ranka fan... but seriously - I wonder if this ground has already been covered elsewhere in the fandom, it's been 6 years after all.
  8. I recently bought a VF-171 (CF Version) and Amored Parts set from a member here (thanks again Kurisama!) and decided to get to work on making it “Accurate” according to the second Macross Frontier movie. The TV version never shows the Nightmare “dressed up” unless it’s the EX version. While the movie version shows the CF version all armored up, but the colours are always grey. What to do? I figured I’ve got plenty of grey paints and an airbrush, so why not paint them? Here’s how I did it. After extensive screen caps of the movie, I made an educated guess that what's seen is basically a light and a dark grey. Easy enough. For the light grey, I went with “Light Ghost Gray” or FS36375 and for the darker gray, “Gunship Gray” or FS36118. The darker grey only got used on the chest armour, the "missile box" on the forearm/vertical stabilizer, and hinge parts for the shin armor, as the rest of the parts seemed to offer enough contrast with the darker plastic already there. Figuring disassembly would be the easiest approach to painting seperate colours, I hit my first hurtle - the chest piece was the only part I had any success breaking down. Luckily the rest of the parts were not terribly tricky to mask. I painted the bottom portion dark gray, and the top part light gray, being careful to incorporate the darker plastic for a “preshade” effect in the overall paint application. This may not be movie accurate but I like the look and contrast. I'm almost certain the middle chest piece should be the same as the outer parts, but decided to keep it as is. And then “tried it on” to see what I thought. Not bad… So here's what I had, after a bit of playing around, showing some parts painted, others in their natural "Blue" colour. Moving on to the other parts, I used Humbrol Maskol for the fine vents and grills, and thinly cut strips of Tamiya masking tape for everything else. A combination of tape and blue tac was used for the rocket nozzles (and they were a pain). Paint was applied in various coats, always being careful to use heavily thinned, semi transparent layers to give me a lot of leeway in the degree of “preshade” that came through. This was a good thing, because I had a lot of trouble getting the paint to spray properly. I ended up with a lot of spatter, which seems to come from not thinning the paint enough, and it drying on the tip. I usually get the paint consistency right, about halfway through my painting process. This time was no different. With it finally all painted, I concentrated on applying a very thinned wash of lightened black acrylic paint. I managed to thin a bit too “hot” with windex on one application, and removed some of the base paint on one leg armour piece. The rest went without too much problem, as I started thinning with plain water instead. I also applied a dark grey wash to the Valk itself, to help bring out some of the panel detail. Here it is, all properly dressed up now (with the parts just sitting on the Valk, not snapped in). While I'm not completely satisfied "it's done" I do feel it looks a lot more movie like now. Maybe some dry brushing with a lighter colour on the edges of the armor would be something worth trying? Any thoughts?
  9. May’n, The Galactic Fairy at AFA 2013, Singapore. Once again May’n is part of the line- up of artistes from Japan that performed at the Premier anime event in the region – Anime Festival Asia 2013 at Suntec Convention Hall, in Singapore beginning on the 8th till 10th of November. The three of us, vanpang, VF25-F and Ming were there for the event. EVENT AT HORIPRO BOOTH - 8th November 2013 Just like the previous year 2012, HoriPro has set up a booth at AFA. As we walked towards it, we saw May’n has left a message for her fans who have come to Singapore. Her promotional video was playing and fans have already crowded around the stage area of the booth. A short time later May’n san came out and introduced herself. After talking to her fans, she presented us with a song – ‘Chase The World’ (OP from Accel World), much to the delight of everyone at the booth. Over the next 2 days, various artistes from HoriPro, also took to the stage to meet their fans. We managed to secure an interview with May’n on the first day of the event on 8 November 2013. Below is an extract from the interview. The interview was through a translator and therefore certain replies may be lost in translation. THE INTERVIEW : Us : Hi, May’n san. Nice to see you again. This makes the 4th time we see you this year! May’n : Wow! Nice to see you again! Q : The Big news is of course your 9th towards the 10th Anniversary celebrations and the upcoming World Tour. What is the concept for your new tour “Dots and Lines”. May’n : It has been my fervent wish to perform in every prefecture in Japan. And with my upcoming tour. I will be able to achieve my dream. The Dots refers to a trail like footprints left by a person moving from one place to another and the “Lines” represents the borders of each prefecture and later for the World Tour, it will be borders of each country. NOTE : The tour starts in February 2014 and ends in August 2014 – 47 in total) Q : When we heard of Nendroid version of May’n san, many fans are excited about it. Have you had a chance to look at it? May’n : Yes. I’ve seen it (smile). Q : I’ve asked some fans what they would like as accessories for the Nendroid to come with :- 1. a Mike, 2. a Taiyaki (a waffle shaped like a fish with Red Bean fillings), or 3. a Hippo (May’n’s favorite animal). May’n : (Laughs surprisingly at the requests) Hmmmm…..there will be a surprise accessory. Q : With reference to your visit to Vietnam, what impressed you the most in Hanoi? May’n : I was thinking who would know me in Vietnam? And I was pleasantly surprised when there were fans there! Us : Yes! There was a video showing your performance and there were fans in the background shouting ‘May’n!’ and ‘Bucho!’ just before you started singing. May’n : Yes! I was so surprised. NOTE : May’n attended the ABU TV song festival as a special guest, representing Japan and performed ‘Vivid’ – the opening song for the anime ‘Blood Lad’ Q : In your blog about the food in Vietnam, there was a picture of some fried marinated insects. Did you try it? May’n : Yes! I ate it! (laughingly) Q : What kind of insect was it? May’n : I have no idea! Whenever I go and visit other countries, I always like to try food that cannot be found in Japan. Q : What else did you try and perhaps describe what are they? May’n : A Vietnamese’ okonomiyaki’ (pancake – stuff with vegetable and meat) After that we had a short discussion about ‘ The Future of Entertainment’ and something called ‘Future Viewing’ That rounds up our interview with May’n san EVENT AT HORIPRO BOOTH AND MAIN STAGE (9TH & 10TH NOVEMBER 2013) There was also an introduction of HoriPro’s artistes at the Main AFA stage on 9th November. (Valerie, Ayaka Ohashi, Asusa Tadokoro and ‘Senpai’ May’n) Each performed a song for the audience and when May’n performed ‘Vivid’, what was just an Introduction, erupted into a concert as fans took out their light sticks and joined in. For the next two days, May’n had a ‘Meet and Greet’ event at the HoriPro booth , which anyone who buys any of her merchandize can go up to the stage and May’n herself will autograph it and have a chance to shake hands with her. As expected for an artiste of her caliber, the line was so long that it almost circled the booth almost twice! On the second day, the line was equally long as many of the fans decided once was not enough, and they’re not going to miss this chance to see her up close and personal. Many fans came from Japan and other countries. CONCERT NIGHT (9TH November 2013) Performing together that night were Lisa, Milky Holmes, then Eiru Aoi and finally May’n. Her performance starts off with 4 dancers entering the darkened stage. The crowd immediate responded with excitement as their wait for their favorite artiste has ended. Immediately after the cheering died down, May’n opened the concert with ‘Forbidden Elixir’ (from Macross Frontier 2nd movie – Sayonara Tsubasa), followed by ‘Chase the World’ (Opening song for Accel World), a brief intro and ‘ Outsider’ from the online game ‘Oni Musha Soul’ from Capcom. A break and May’n works the crowd, asking ‘Are you ready AFA?’ And to that, the fans replied as loud as they could ‘YEEEES!’ May’n responded ‘Okay, Singapore! READY! GO! – which is the opening song for ‘Okami san and her 7 companions’, Next was an old favorite -‘Thou shalt not die!’ (Opening from the anime ‘Shangri-la’). Another old favorite – Universal Bunny! Next is the new crowd favourite – Vivid (Opening for the anime ‘Blood Lad’) Just then she informed us that it this is the last song. My fellow fan standing next to me was like ‘What? So fast!’. He was not the only person who felt that as I can hear many said ‘Nooooo!’ and even ‘Encore!’ This phenomenon has been happening every year at AFA, maybe her act is the last on the list or her songs has the ability to fast forward us into the future cause it really felt like 10 or 15 minutes only! (every artiste had 8 songs to perform (except for Milky Holmes) and one song is about 5 minutes – 40 minutes in total) But what happens next made it a most memorable evening indeed. May’n, speaking in English! – This is my 6th time performing in AFA, Singapore is my first overseas performance. I was so nervous as I asked myself – who would know me outside of Japan? (Back in 2008, during the first AFA, she was the only singer for the whole evening! You can only imagine the pressure on her as she alone carried the entire show and the expectations that comes with it as that was also the closing night for AFA). ‘ But when I performed for all of you for the first time, I was so happy and surprised that all of you know me and my songs. AFA, made me what I am today. Thank you all! It certainly moved me (and many fans too), enough for me to include this together with the interview. What comes next (also the last song for the evening) is the sweetest ‘Diamond Crevasse’ I’ve heard in years, as what she said made it somehow meaningful and the fans joined in singing. When it was over, you can clearly see May’n trying to hold back her emotions as the crowd cheered. And with that she said goodbye to everyone, promising to be back and left the stage. As usual, the crowd screamed for ‘Encore!’ but that hasn’t happened since 2009 and the organizers have to announce the concert has ended to get the crowd out of the concert hall. Personally, we do miss it, hopefully one day it will return, till then everyone remained optimistic. Thank you to May’n san, the organizers of HoriPro booth, the ever helpful folks of AFA, Shawn Chin, Aiko and Chun Kah of Sozo Pte. Ltd as well Lim Wee Ling, Joanne Tham and Stephanie Chin of Asia PR Werkz Pte Ltd.

  11. It's been a long time but long time but just in case people haven't bothered to watch Frontier or its movies, there are spoilers ahead... I finally just finished watching the Macross Frontier movies and overall I thought they were pretty poorly done (but thanks just the same to the member that hooked me up with them!). One of the many things that kind of rubbed me the wrong way with the movies was the story of Macross Galaxy. I think I've kind of put it together but do we have a thread already someone can point me to (my search came up empty) that lays out the story of Macross Galaxy? Here's what I've surmised (it's only based on one viewing of the TV show a long while ago and the one viewing of the movies recently so there's lots of room for error here): 0) Macross Galaxy bucks tradition with most emigration fleets in that it's very cyborg/implant friendly. So there's a culture of enhancement on the ship up to the point where very few of the passengers aren't enhanced in some way and all of the leadership now has completely foregone flesh and blood form and dumped their consciousness into a network of some sort. 1) This fleet picks up the survivors of the long range research mission Mao Nome was a part of. Dr. Grace joins the leadership of Galaxy in abandoning her corporeal form. She continues Mao's research with Mao's granddaughter Sheryl. Ranka's brother Brera is heavily 'enhanced' although I don't think we know if this was so he could survive wounds from the attack or just because that's what happens on Galaxy. If just about everyone from the research vessel ends up on Galaxy, how does Ozma end up with Ranka? 2) Through Grace Galaxy learns of the ultra powerful Vajra. I think Sheryl is infected with the V-type virus from her days with Mao. So Galaxy uses Sheryl and her singing to draw the Vajra to Galaxy so they can study them some more. They quickly realize that having Vajra around is bad so... 3) Galaxy sends Sheryl to Frontier. This is where things feel really forced in the movie-verse because there's talk about the Vajra home world and 'untold resources' or something like that. The idea though is that Galaxy needs to see some more interactions with mankind in order to hopefully break the Vajra communications network (essentially, they need to learn to speak Vajra). So the plan is that Sheryl will sing on Frontier and the Vajra will come to Frontier and Galaxy can then observe and crack the code. 4) In the movie-verse it seems that Battle Galaxy and the core components of Galaxy have been lost to the Vajra but that the core bio-data unit the Galaxy leadership now resides in has been smuggled aboard Frontier in the vessel Sheryl, Grace, and Brera have arrived in (or in one of the many other ships that must have smuggled a couple hundred Galaxy soldiers in). Without Battle Galaxy the emigration fleet is undefended so Sheryl hires SMS to help (SMS is moderately successful in helping some of the ships elude the Vajra). 5) Without a fleet of their own any more, Galaxy must take over Frontier. Somehow though, Frontier has figured out this plan and ambushes the would-be aggressors. 6) Galaxy ultimately succeeds because Brera is a cyborg ninja who can't be stopped. Why aren't all the other soldiers that Galaxy brings over to Frontier nearly as bad-ass as Brera? 7) So at this point it seems that Galaxy has completely given up on their own emigration fleet with the leadership of Galaxy instead intent on universal domination using the Vajra as their weapon. Unfortunately they don't have a physical form any more so it seems like they wouldn't really have much in the way of motivation but I guess that's beyond the point. So, are there some key parts I'm missing with regard to our knowledge of Galaxy? Did I screw some stuff up? For the main bad guy I feel like the story was tucked into the background most the time.

  16. I watched DYRL and just finished SDF. SDF was great! Question is what should I watch next? (and any ideas where I can watch for free would be great too)
  17. I have a few questions about the escorts of the different ships that accompany the NMC ships, such as the ones seen in the Macross 7 fleet: -First of all, Why doesn't the Mark Twain VII has an escort vessel? Is it too small in comparison to the other vesels to be assigned one or is there another reason? -Before the next question, one quick doubt: is the Budokan Concert ship seen in the opening of Macross 7 Dynamite part of the Macross 7 fleet? -While Mark Twain VII Resort ship operates without an escort vessel, the non-animated Heaven Cemetary ship supposedly has a Northampton class vessel docked to it. But what about the Budokan Concert ship? Does it have an escort vessel? -If it does have an escort, what ship class does the it belong to? -The escorts of the Three Star Factory ship and Sunnyflower Agricultural ship are a Northampton and a Guantánamo class ships respectively. Is there a reason why they don't have an Uraga class ship as an escort instead, just like the rest of emigration vessels? -Is it possible for them to dock with an Uraga class ship instead if available or if a emergency required them to? -Finally, would it be right to assume that by the late 2050's, these emigration vessels could also potentially dock with a Macross Quarter class vessel instead of their other more traditional escorts?
  18. I finaly finished my first model ever, I hated the pink parts of the model so I decided to paint it matte black, and gun metal. In some parts the paint chiped or scratched after the final assembly and first transformation, and yes I clear coated a few times but still... over all I think It´s a good model and fun to build, but some pieces don't fit to well, making the transformation a pain, specially in jet mode, the shoulder area never stays where it should. hope you like it, here are some quick pics in jet mode.
  19. Has anyone heard of a Macross Frontier Complete Soundtrack in the works? A few years back I read something on another forum about the possibility of a complete soundtrack. I've been holding off on all the normal releases just in case. Yoko Kanno did put together a Ghost in the Shell soundtrack box with all the released CDs and a extra track compilation of songs. That GitS release is still missing a few songs however. I would like a complete Macross Frontier soundtrack to go with my original Macross the Complete CD set.
  20. Have a question about the 1/60 Bandai Macross Frontier models. I was reading anymoon.com about the re-release of these and was having trouble trying to figure out how to tell the difference in packaging from a version 1 and a version 2 release. From what I have read, only the VF-25F and VF-25S were re-released but are there differences in the packaging that can help me spot the difference? My next question was that I heard that none of the super armor or super pack sets from the version 1 models will work on the version 2 models; is this true? I later read that Bandai was going to re-release superpack/armor sets for the version 2 but has this happened yet and what does packing look like for those. I recently went to a Mandarake store where it looked like they had the super armor and super packs and they were packaged in a white box with a wireframed Valkerie with only the armor parts overlayed in color to show what you were buying.

  22. I've looked at the footage for M.F.: Wings of Goodbye and I realized it is basically the VF-1A upgraded with newer FAST boosters and armor parts. The model I've seen posted on the internet looks nothing like the VF-19EF in the movie footage. The picture below, I took the YF-19 from Mr March's site and added SMS logos. Please note: The original was colorized by Mr March.
  23. Okay the idea behind this thread is simple, users tend to ask questions that are, for better words, either easy to find common knowledge or sound pretty funny. You don't want to look stupid and we don't want to have mod a bunch of little topics. Examples: "Whose that green haired lady?" "What happen to Rick hunter?" "Did Minmay kiss her brother?" "Is this video from this country a bootleg?" "What's with the Zentradi elf-ears?" "Is there an official answer to <insert story="" or="" production="" trivia="" here="">?" "Where can I find a copy of this <insert product="" here="">?" "When will we see <insert product="" here=""> come out?" "What are this things?"/"Where are these things?"/"Who are these things?" "What <insert show or episode> did <insert event or item> show up?" and other newbie or short questions like these post them here. Ground rules It's only for newbie-type and short question/answer type questions about Macross. When someone post a simple question here hopefully one the more experienced posters will tell the newbie the answer. It's Question & Answer-format only. Nothing more. Newbies tend to be lazy and ask questions about everything. If you can point the newbie to the source it's better than just telling them the answer straight. If you see a newbie question about Macross somewhere else direct them here and their other topic will be closed/deleted. Search is a great tool.
