Only TWICE...? I mean, I saw the original Star Wars TWELVE TIMES in the theater... Fourteen if you include the Special Edition!I'm just happy that the outer space SciFi dry spell is over for a while. Granted we had a few here and there but this year we have SW7, Star Trek, Independance Day 2, and another Star Trek to look forward too.
Back to the theater on Saturday to see Star Wars again, first time I've watched a film at the theater twice since the original Star Wars.
Okay, yeah... Most of of those were before affordable home video, but STILL...

I just watched Macross for the first time in it's original Japanese form. Hadn't watched the whole thing since I last watched the Robotech version on toonami...when was that...1997?
Anyway....I sure wish I'd been following your blog all along! That would have been great to read the commentary after each ep. Oh well...maybe next time.
The thing that really struck me was just how BIZARRE it all was. Was the show intended for Japanese children? I barely remember the Robotech version but they must have really had to chop it up to make it "appropriate" for American children. I can't imagine even an edited version being aired on American TV today.
What was the reception when it first aired in Japan? Did only geeks like it or was it popular with mainstream audiences?
That's a good question... I know it was pretty much the biggest thing until Zeta Gundam came out, two years later. But, yeah, two PM on Sundays was a pretty mainstream, family TV time, so I guess plenty of people were at least exposed to it...?
Anyway, NEXT!

I have a feeling that if the military sci-fi Macross fans don't like this, it's going to do well for new fans, maybe in the same way Frontier did, but perhaps not in that scale. I'm looking forward to it, even if I can't watch it right away due to being at a concert later tonight.
CRUE!!!

I'd hope that with more and more anime BDs having English subs that that would be the case. With Macross, they may be a little gun-shy, though.

I think I will off the forum until I've watch Ep 01. So far the method work on Force awaken
Well, you've got about 16 hours before it airs...

Nekko Basara really wasn't too far off the mark...

What comes next should be the explanation of how we got to the events in the opening of The Force Awakens.
I'm sure they're gonna leave that to the new EU...

I've heard, as well, that the "opera speech" was the part that was rewritten by Tom Stoppard.I believe Palpatine's lines were the best scripted lines in that movie, and it's a credit to Ian McDiarmid for rising above the schmuck and delivering them with conviction (biting his tongue behind his teeth when he admits he's a Sith lord is another subtle move used to great effect).
But yeah, that dialogue is interesting when considered outside of the immediate scope of that scene - and is just as applicable to the Force Ghosts that appear later!

I don't know what y'all are talking about. When I met girls, I'd say (sheepishly), "Well, I like Macross..." and they'd say, to my surprise, "ME TOO! Sheryl or Ranka?"
I'd say, "I like Sheryl," which would earn me a scowl. The girl would say, "Oh... I like Ranka," and that would be that.

Are you planning to do it all, or just SDF Macross?
We'll see... In the meantime...

Full list of characters from AnimeNewsNetwork, along with their english names and character synopsis.
Um... Yeah. All of that has been posted here over the past couple of weeks. In fact, I'd bet that ANN's source here is Tochiro.
-
Okay... I listened to the first 18 minutes, and I'll listen to the rest later in the week. I'm sorry it wasn't full-on knock-your-socks-off awesome, but at least my expectations are tempered now.

However it would need a good explanation, as we all know from previous movies, there is always a Master and an Apprentice.
So once both were destroyed.. how does a new one come out of the galaxy?
The Midichlorians create one, obviously...
-
We know Tochiro will like it, we know Renato won't...Whats more NB is Tochiro not giving us a first impression of delta.
Help me Tochi-one-kanobi, you're our only help !
I'm mostly interested in what Save has to say about it.

Wow... The Sentinels really ripped that off, didn't they?I think it's like one of the Gerwalk designs from Genociders, the pre-Macross project.

You mean that man was possessed by a male Protodeviln...To be fair that lady was possessed by a male protodevlin
(And yeah, the new trailer looks (and sounds!) great!)
-
I mostly agree with Keith (for once), although I think I liked the movie more than he did.
But yeah, since Lucas said they discarded his version, I really want to see what his version was.
-
It's been this way since 1984, though...
-
Depends on if TV Frontier or Wings of Goodbye is considered the established continuity.
in one he dies, the other he lives.
Both are. (And the manga versions are, as well.)
I bet we'll never know for sure.
-
I think they did, to a degree... It's not for nothing that we all thought her name was "Lanka" initially.Looking at this discussion.... Why didn't anyone ask what Alto Saotome or Ranka Lee meant back in 2007?

As long as it's within their territory, they can put whatever they want on their releases, as long as it's not the robotech dub.
They can, yes, but it could still open them up to a potential lawsuit from HG.
