  1. Sounds very cool, if you want to read a book that has a similar set up to the Leauge comics, I'd recommend the Anno Dracula series by Kim Newman, it has the same kind of progression (Victorian England > World War I > cold war spies) mixing popular characters from other works together... but with a Vampire focus. And yeah, I guess using X for Extra is a bit silly, however if you use E it become LEG whch just doesn't sound indimidating. But I'll deffinitly check out the rest of the Leauge stuff.
  2. Well a straight up adaptation of the graphic novel would have been very very R rated. The main problem is the movie was not only an awful adaptation of the comic, it treated the actual victorian characters with very little respect for their own source stories. Again Steampunk is something I almost always love... but when I saw the LXG movie in theatres I actually lost interest about half way though, and spent the rest of the time just making out with my girlfriend at the time, cause both of us were totally disgusted with the film. (She was huge both on Dracula and Sherlock Holmes and she hated it this did to those stories). I still havn't even read the second graphic novel, should pick it up sometime.
  3. Archie-syndrome is deffinitly a problem with American comics... but that wasn't always the case. the Golden Age Batman (what would be called Earth II Batman from the silver age onwards) had the following happen to him -He got married to Selena Kyle -Retired as the batman and became police commisioner of Gotham City -Had a Daughter named Helena -Had his wife die on him -had his daughter grow up and become a Superhero herself -died of old age likewise the other Earth II characters did grow older... it's not until the Silverage onwards that we had characters who were frozen in time. I agree it's a real problem. development is slow in a lot of places, sometimes it gets reset (*cough* Spider-man and Mary Jane I'm looking at you), and so on... In that sense I really do like Supergirl, cause even though she was messed up for a long time... things still happened with her and you really feel like she's maturing. LXG is just an awesome comic, (though that might be the fact that I love love LOVE Steampunk!), shame the movie was nowhere near as good.
  4. You know it comes up enough in other threads... I thought it would be interesting to have a place to discuss what's going on with American comic books... wether we're talking about Superheroes, GI Joe or heck even Betty and Veronica digests . Right now I'm reading, Deadpool (Marvel) Supergirl (DC) Trinity (DC) and I will be reading GI Joe (IDW) GI Joe Origins (IDW) and GI Joe Cobra (IDW) when they start next year. So here are my thoughts on things at current DC/Supergirl New Krypton So how long do you think this "New Krypton" stuff will last, they can't maintain having thousands of Kyrptonians on Earth for very long... it makes Supergirl, and Superman not all that special. I dunno if this is going to be a permant thing or not. I do however like that they took the oppertunity to explain Supergirl's Identity issues, (even if it makes her seem a little too much like her Earth-2 counterpart, Powergirl) and give her one fixed origin. What is annoying is the way they havn't been able to settle on her private life still... She's on her second secret identity and is now trying to decide if she should keep it or not after just one issue. Trinity I can't decide if I like this series or not, it's half way through it's one year run of weekly comics... and I went from loving it (before the spell was completed), to thinking it was a cheap House of M knock-off to thinking it cold get really interesting when we found out the villain's spell backfired. I'm in this one for the long hall... just not sure if it's going to be epic failure or not. Deadpool So how come he's got three warring voices now, two in his head and one in his mouth? I remember he thought in little yellow boxes but the multiple personalities is new to me... otherwise Deadpool is just as awesome as always.
  5. Yes Tampopo is great... but I did have to go to have Ramen with my friend after we watched it in Japanese class... nomnomnom! Speaking of the original Gojira, I uploaded clip from KOTM (I have the two disc set that has both versions of the film) in this clip the Japanese characters are talking about the possibility of killing Gojira and the english characters are talking about going to Odo Island to look for clues. Freaking funny if you understand what's being said. Been a while since I saw a good asian film, last one I checked out was Kamikaze girls I think.
  6. Maybe we should all go underground And try to live a life without the sun. Please be careful not to make a sound, Because there may not be room for everyone. (Do you think you might...) sorry couldn't resist.
  7. Well it sucks for the fans sure, but can you blame him? He's living the life he wants, how he wants it... which is cool
  8. Is it? BOTP or G-Force are not distinct Intelectual Properties from Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, in the same way as Robotech is from Macross... Name changes and such of course, but as far as I know those shows were just adaptations of one show, not stringing a bunch of different shows together (like Voltron, Macron-1 or Robotech). So while of course the hard core fan might cheer to see the original Japanese name (which I can certainly understand) isn't a film that seems to be targeting a western audience likely to resonate with the casual fans if you use the name they remember from their childhoods? Again, I can deffinitly understand the hard core fans wanting the Japanese name, and forgive me if I'm mistaken because to me the three titles are all I know the show by, I've never watched it, it was before my time. But I doubt it could envoke the kind of split fandom you get with Robotech and Macross... and I think they'd attract more casual viewers with the English title, while the hard core fans would grumble but still watch it. In any case, I don't seem the same concern rising for fans of Astroboy, because again by all accounts Tezuka liked the name (and there is the problem of the DC comic book character named Mighty Atom), It was included in the 2001 series as part of the Japanese title and the phrase was used in the first closing theme to the 80s version (seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCOcbBfDkRc )... so really fans can't complain too much about the title. (though I did not like it when Manga subbed Atom's name as Astro on the Japanese track and didn't provided un-edited episodes for the Japanese track, but alas).
  9. Ahh never watched it when I was a kid so I have no idea what goes on there... just since DC used that title for the comic semi-recently I was wondering if they'd use it for recognition.
  10. Wow... apparantly this is the directors second film as director the first being Flushed Away And the guy who did the screenplay hasn't had any credited work since Space Jam.
  11. Are they calling it that? not "Battle of the Planets" Probably still Tetsuwan Atom in Japan... the name Astroboy has been incorporated into the Japanese series since the 80s where it was used in the closing theme, it is the official international title so of course they'll use it on an english trailer/release.
  12. Yeah I've seen that, even funnier are the ones who think the novels come first. "That Shadow Chronicles movie is crap, did these guys even read the novels? But they're nowhere near as bad as the Japanese who for some reason adapted each saga of the novels seperatly, and then had all these sequals to the macross portion, which make no sense if you read the books." Seriously, I've seen it, it happens.
  13. Game looks like it's probably going to have a strong plot, with good comedic moments thrown in there (as Ghostbusters should be)... but yeah, gameplay is another matter.
  14. Finally saw this, the only real justification form my perspetive for them remaking this portion of the series is the scene where Misato showed Shinji Lililth, there was lots of new scenes but that's the only one that seemed really important. Or the 5th child? Rei, Asuka, Shinji, Toji then Kaworu.
  15. I thought their annoyance was what was supposed to make it funny. I don't see ROTJ as being so much more immature then the first two films, so it had a race of primitives who use knowledge of the the terrain to inflict major damage on a technologially superior force, that's been done before and it's plausible. If they actually were Wookies instead of short cute things, you probably wouldn't have a problem with that. And the rest of the story, the redemption arc, the military story... that wasn't all that kidified, I didn't think. Also I don't know how dreaded the Ewoks were they seem to have worked at capturing the kids of the day, getting their own cartoon and two movies... That's just me, Ewoks are much better then Gungans... at least we don't have to listen to what they're saying.
  16. Liked the movie, makes me want to try playing the games. I understand it, Claire is already established so she can hit the ground running, besides I didn't feel she was shafted... she dominated the first act, had lots of screentime in the second and in the third she still played a major roll (albiet from the sidelines). Also she had a lot going on, like learning that her work hindered the development of the vaccine etc etc. Well it didn't seem they had an extra weapon to spare. So he gave her his gun when he couldn't use it.
  17. I think it was done as a thrill ride... see I get the idea that this Kirk became a delinquient when he was supposed to enter Star Fleet, but didn't because the time line got messed up.
  18. well now that I think of it, the for play part usually comes before the sticky part not after... so I guess there's no problem there. And we should really stop now.
  19. That would be the Ectoplasam! *nods*
  20. http://www.geekalerts.com/u/darth-snow.jpg I bought this, I will take pics myself tomorrow.
  21. Because James Rolfe (The AVGN) does not live in his parent's basement, makes a decent ammount of money of the gag (by hosting on sites with ads, selling DVDs of his show and paypal donations), and has thousands of fans, so everyone jumps on the bandwagon?
  22. Of course they are they're all tanks that went into production around that time... but still with some tweaking it could be cool I think.
  23. This is interesting, so they are saying WEP owns the animation but not the rights to make spin-off movies and such pretaining to it... this reminds me of something...
  24. Despite being an aficionado of all things Steampunk and neo-victorian, I never watched Nadia I remember being un-enthused by the ADV trailer (but that's when I was just getting into steampunk), it looked like a silly kiddy show. Now I feel like I'm missing out, and should hasten to the video rental place.
  25. Well since he states he wants to be Angry Video Game Nerd of Anime or something... it seems he's not trying to convey new information but have nerd rage to comic effect... briefly watched enough of the pokemon review just now to see that he fails. I mean we don't need AVGN to tell us that Superman 64 sucks, but he does it anyway... So this isn't about readily available information or not, I'm sure it didn't take this guy long to learn the shocking truth of Robotech DUN DUN DUN!!! But that he thinks he can be funny by bitching about it. oh well, everyone needs a hobby.
