  1. The "always sides with the underdog", and "loses 100 out of 10 battles" reminds me a lot of Remy talking to Rick in Casablanca. to paraphrase 'in Spain, you fought on the loyalist side ... you ran guns to ethiopia ... in both cases the winning side would have paid you much better". A mercenary who is at heart a sentimentalist. Perhaps he actually does have a sort of deathwish; he wants to die for a hopeless cause
  2. I forgot that Spacy uses airforce rankings for the English translations, so a Captain (rank) would never be a captain (commander) of something like Elysium. Darn Spacy (and fleets in general in macross) having ships commanded by colonels.
  3. A nimitz class aircraft carrier has three captain ranked officers, the CO, RO, and XO, for the operation of the ship (there are a couple more in the air group). In macross, the full SDF sized carriers seem to be about equivalent in importance (justifiable to have its own flag officer at times)Based on that, Elysion would probably only merit one captain rank officer, with a couple commanders for the arm ships. I'm not hip to the japanese, but johnson may not even be captain rank, he would still be called captain since he is in command. Then again, elysion only seems to support 5 aircraft...so maybe aether and hemera are just empty shells when the big guy is out
  4. I'll choose to believe that. I can accept the "entire planet has only one biome" trope for narrative ease, but the name stuff always feels lazy
  5. The chemical is created by reaction between the voldor cation (probably a metal - voldorite) and some sort of unique polyphenol (windiol). Polyphenols are a huge and diverse class of chemicals and the same one that causes var could be the source of the windemere apples' deliciousness or coloring.A lot of non-color non-flavor polyphenols function as protein activators/deactivators by binding to specific proteins. A possible mechanism is that ionization of windiol by voldorite changes the solubility of windiol, letting it cross the blood-brain barrier. The cells can't digest the windiol so it stays put. The bad singing and/or agression catalyzes the windiol binding to a specific protein which messes with your brain chemistry, affecting your cognition, adrenaline production, etc. The good singing dissociates the windiol-protein bonds, but can't eliminate the windiol itself. The fold bacteria metabolize windiol, making receptors immune. Windemere folks could already metabolize windiol due to enzymes evolved from living in its presence. A consequence of this idea would be that anyone who eats the apples and drinks the water with voldorite is permanently at risk, and that V type infection might cure it. Also that a cure could be developed from Frejya's gut. It could be that the same mechanism is responsible for windemerians strength and lifespan. Whew, never thought that chemical and biomolecular engineering degree would be applicable to macross.
  6. I'd love to see more one-shot ovas or movies that don't attempt to world build or advance the overall narrative, but instead just focus in characters in the universe. But maybe I just want more plus. I think GG may have been trolling the audience a bit with the cat puns. I'm less sure they were trolling about my new favorite chemical compound "voldor bicarbonate" I guess that would be VoHCO3 As for the planet names, is this the first time Macross has fallen into the bad habit of indigenous place names being puns if earth locations? I'm hoping the names are "colonial names", like everything in Jamaica being named after English things. That would explain it, a bit.
  7. I'm going the cynical route on the ears - it's cuz people like space elves. Also it thematically fits with the fantasyish "knights" 'n such
