  1. This is the realm of science fiction and there have been numerous cases in various shows where fighters can get hacked, whether they are AI or not. Why not use AI since the pilots are expendable and can all be in the "top 10%" category of all pilots? This seems to almost be an idea from Dune where the culture is so paranoid of AI because of one bad experience that they ban it completely and rely completely on the human mind.
  2. Sorry, I know why the YF-21 didn't make it. I meant this to be a comparison between manned and unmanned fighters.
  3. Okay, so I love Macross and I know it's fiction, but one thing really bugs me. How did the YF-19 get chosen to become the next generation fighter? Wouldn't the Ghost make more sense? I realize there are reasons for this, but I find them not very good. 1. Human/Zentradi pilots are creative and can think non-linearly. They have intuition. AI can be predictable and therefore not as good. This may be a true fact, but I think that you have to be an exceptional pilot to beat the Ghost, much less a possible future generation unmanned fighter. Guld was exceptional, and he still died fighting it. Not only that, he is dead permanently, whereas you can build another Ghost fighter. An unmanned fighter could also make more maneuvers that will kill a normal human being. Imagine having an entire squadron of unmanned fighters that would all be better than 90% of a similar squadron of manned fighters. Ghosts are expendable, but ace pilots aren't. 2. You could lose control of unmanned fighters, like how Sharon took control of the Ghost. I think a manned fighter could just as easily be controlled by an outside party. It seems that the majority of the controls in a valk are computer controlled, and the amount of signals connecting a fighter to its mother ship could just as easily be intercepted and be used to control the fighter. I know some people are going to point out that there are unmanned fighters in the new series, but they seem to be recon drones that are not very good at fighting. Was the Ghost only as good as it was because Sharon was controlling it? Frontier seems to have it right by having the new VF-27 be remote controlled, which I would assume allows the pilot to live if the ship gets destroyed. EDIT: If you're going to make a thread, use a better thread topic.
  4. I understand that thermonuclear = fusion. You typically need, however, a fission reaction to generate the extremely high temperatures that start the fusion reaction in the first place. Fission = radioactive. But this was cleared up by Azrael.
  5. If the Valks use thermonuclear engines, would there be a crapload of radioactive elements being released each time one of the brownies get shot down?
  6. I'm a mathematician, which kinda falls in line with being a philosopher. Keith, what everyone is saying is completely right; you need proof to back up your statements, or they become simply opinions, nothing more. I started this thread to have some discussion over a funny statment, not to start some argument as you have. But dude, if you feel the need to argue, at least do it correctly. If you don't, then people will begin to disregard your opinions, even when they are valid.
  7. I think the genre would be similar, but as far as individual songs are concerned, I think "My boyfriend is a pilot" would have to go with "Baby one more time". Not because the lyrics are similar, but because it kept getting played over, over, over and over again, just like when "Baby" first came out. It was catchy at first, but after a while you begin to want to throw a boot at Minmei's head when the intro to that song starts to play again. But then they played it again in M+, and it was good and nostalgic...
  8. Well, this topic spawned a lot of serious responses that I SHOULD have expected (never anger the Macross Gurus ) , but to argue against Britney because she is manufactured tripe, and saying that Minmay is not is hypocracy. I got news for you, boys -- 99% of ALL asian singers are "manufactured" singers by western standards. I mean, J-Pop idols are usually picked for their pretty faces anyway, and based on that trait, they are allowed to act, sing, etc., even if they suck @$$ at all those things. The only thing they have to be able to do perfectly is give little twirls in a mini skirt and flash a cute smile, so that no one is the wiser. I believe Minmay fits all those qualities, so she is technically no better than Britney.
  9. Actually, that reminds me of something else she said. In the original SDF: Macross (I showed that to her first, and yes, she did like it), when the big fight was gonna happen and Minmei was going to sing and then kiss her cousin to freak out the Zentradi, my gf said, "A KISS?! They should have broadcast porn instead; that would have REALLY incapacitated them."
  10. Lol. Oh no, I know they acknowledge it, but it's still a scary thought if that were to happen to us.
  11. I love Macross and I think that DYRL is great, but I couldn't help mentioning something funny my girlfriend said when I showed it to her. "So the Protoculture civilization was thousands of years old and radically advance. The only thing left of their culture was the plate with 'Ai Oboetai Masuka' on it, which ultimately saves mankind. "That's like our civilization becoming erradicated, along with all the works of Mozart, Beethoven, etc., and the only thing left of us besides a ruined city is a Britney Spears cd that has the power to stop a genocidal war." I like 'Ai Oboetai Masuka' a lot, but she's right! It's a pop song, and the analogy is a frighteningly true one, lol.
  12. I recently went to a Japanese book store called Iwase Books by my place, and the girl at the counter mentioned to me that a new Macross Artbook is being released on March 1st this year. Does anyone know anything about it? There were no specifics given to me, not even cover artwork. Also, there was a Macross Artbook released years ago that had designs, story, etc. The Macross Design works. Does anybody know if it will be re-released? I was informed that it is not published anymore.
  13. I was wondering if they ever made a singing Minmay doll like on the original tv series? That would be a cool piece of merchandise.
  14. No need to convert, friend. I like Macross more than Robotech, but Robotech still has its place. True, it has numerous faults (in and out of the universe), but when you think about it, it is the main reason why we have Macross as well as other anime in North America now anyway. Stop being angry geek boys and deal with Robotech. You don't have to like it, but stop squabbling like it's some kind of disease. Odds are that it was your first exposure to anime in the first place.
  15. I am shocked that so many people prefer DYRL. While it does obviously have better animation, technology and music, the orginal SDF is longer, and has more character development. This series is about people, and the technology is simply a tool in the background. How can a 2 hour movie compare with 36 episodes in terms of storyline?
