  1. If the hatch opens wide enough where you can just drop the swing bar in and close the hatch, then you have a newer version, if you need to angle the swing bar in and close everything up at the same time and get the geometry of everything just right, you have a first issue.

You should be able to see the scalloping of the knurled pins if you look at the shoulder hinge, if it looks smooth all the way around and you don't see any signs of stress, you should be in the clear.

Ah. Got old swing bar for sure, but learned proper geometry quickly for transformation. The shoulder joint pins do not appear to have a knurled texture on either end, so hopefully I got lucky.

  2. My copy is the first issue and it seems okay, looks like it has the smooth pins. If your copy has the non tinted canopy and the easier to use hip lock then you should be okay.

Got rainbow canopy. Not sure about the hips or smooth or knurled pins. No stress marks out of the box though.

  3. Real life has kept me from my Macross hobby (and these forums) for a while. Upon seeing this in a store on a business trip, I picked up a Hikaru VF-1S non-anniversary (stand-alone, no super/strike parts). Does this version have the shoulder pin issues? Thanks in advance for the replies.

  4. As far as the 5.0L V8 being Supercharged and having 11:1 compression, i'm not sure, but isn't this motor direct injected? If it is, then lower compression isn't necessary to run a blower (or a turbocharger), 10:1 is the new 8.5:1 in direct injected vehicles because of the cooling properties of the fuel on the cylinders during compression. Admittedly 11:1 seems a bit high even for a direct injected motor, but it might not be running very high boost to give it more low end.

No direct injection on the new 5.0; however, "cooling jets" are used to cool the pistons. Hmmm. . . <_<

  5. If that's definitely the new 5.0 engine sitting under the blower; I wonder how far the compression is knocked down.

Information released by Ford on the new 5.0 in the 2011 Mustang GT indicates an 11:1 compression ratio. Without some super high octane fuel, I don't know how this engine doesn't come apart under boost.

  6. The VFX-2 scheme mixes elements of several. But the "thick horizontal yellow rudder stripes with yellow tops" and "yellow with black borders" forward fuselage stripe pegs it as VF-142's design, the Ghostriders. (whose callsign is NOT Ghostrider, and thus NOT who Maverick and Goose flew for)

Also, AA identifies the wing, not the squadron. A wing will usually have multiple squadrons assigned to it at a time. And squadrons will change what wing they belong to every once in a while. In the Navy at least, almost any squadron can be assigned to almost any wing at any time. You can even have a reserve squadron "bump" a frontline Marines or Navy squadron from a wing.

I thought the AA would help in narrowing down what this VF-11 was inspired by. I need to check to see if I have VF-142 decals lying around. The more I mess with it, the more the 1/60 scale VF-11 is becoming one of my favorites. I want to buy more of these, although I'm not sure on the VF-11C.

  7. As I did in the -19 threads, I'd like to cry for a VF-X Ravens color scheme for this one. Unwittingly, my personalized VF-11 has the same carrier/location code ("AA") as the VF-11 in the VF-X2 opening movie.

Squadron identification (cough, cough David Hingtgen)? ^_^
