Yeah I like how they make Robotech this huge masterpiece that changed the landscape of anime in the US over on the other site. Voltron had a bigger impact, and honestly the show that really opened the door was DBZ, Pokemon, and Sailor Moon because even after Robotech aired anime still wasn't that huge in the states. I have talked to many people in my age range (27+) and most don't remember or never saw the show. I saw it because I was in Germany and they should it all the time on AFN but other than that I don't remember being as big as they make it out to be. Especially when other shows were bigger.

That's an often repeated mantra that RT fans use to defend Robotech. Your right, Robotech really didn't made that huge impact like HG want us to believe. That's just a fairy tale perpetuated by HG. And like all of the fairy tales they made up, it's full of BS. Well except for one with Rick and Minmei riding on veritech unicorns on a field of flowers (of life). wacko.gif

Oh yes... I solemnly detest their casual practice of simply publishing their assumptions and speculation as though it were fact instead of doing any research. It set the trend for the decades to come, with crazy, ignorant Robotech fans who don't want to be arsed to actually watch the show (or any show) simply asserting "this is how it is, and it's no use telling me otherwise".

In that period of anime publishing there really was no sold source for actual facts laying around. Research for that time would have had to been done by somebody fluent in Japanese living in Japan that would have to type it on a typewriter then snail mail it to somebody to publish it. Obtaining facts back then was a near impossibility. Still even to this day most get their facts from computer translators that give you the gist of what is being said but still leaving a few holes in the story.

Oh god... I got e-mails from a lurker on Bendo's show telling me to take a listen to his latest offering, which is apparently a two-hour attempt to get under my skin because I dared to offer to devote some space on my server to a RT site for the good people who've been displaced from RT.com and RTX by MEMO and Maverick's serial idiocy. Amusing enough he's accusing me of being in it only for personal gain (he literally accuses me of trying to reshape Robotech in its entirety) while he does what he does for impartial, honest motives (if your bullshit meter isn't pegged by now, it should be). He also accuses us all of being "dumbass liberal white people" elitists who think all Robotech fans are retarded and need to be educated...

All that and I'm not even twenty minutes in... to paraphrase Megatron/Galvatron:

"Podcast, Bendo? This is bad comedy."

EDIT: Oh, and he categorically denies that he is Orguss_Prime, even though it's obvious to everyone and their dog that he is.

I am white?!?!!? News to me. Sorry that I saw Macross Plus in the early 90's and that opened my eyes to the truth lol. God those guys are a hoot I swear.

Hmmm, so now he's trying to do the Al Sharpton-pull the race card to make an issue where there is none play. Can't wait till he pulls the "The white man is bringing me down" issue. Yeah, I'm sure it's all of our fault here at Macrossworld that he's illiterate, and too stupid to really figure things out. I think we all should try to be the topic of conversation on his podcast. It makes for a great laugh, and really puts into perspective just how off he really is.

So it plays a racist-card, and all of a sudden it gets all of us talking about it again... pathetic.
We're just dancing to the tune of its ego, y'know... We talk about it, it thinks its important again... Its not...

Y'know, its just too bad SonofXenu...err, I mean Kaiba...will be going to it again and trying to fight it with facts and reason and a brain....oh my!
I think we should be using someone who could go on its podcaste and just destroy it...period; no more shows, no more credability, just show everyone what it really is.
Too bad such a person doesn't exist...

And XenuKaiba...

Well, point it out for the comedy, but don't engage "It". I think (hope) Seto has learned that reason is what everyone's good buddy is lacking. Listen to the sign that says "Don't feed the idiots", and just keep strolling by the animals at the zoo.

Best to move away from talking about that attention magnet again:

Despite having plans for a Shadow Rising, I seriously doubt HG has put any thought into continuing Robotech. When I say this, I mean serious thoughts about where it can go from here. Without continual access to the talent and material that originally brought them somewhere, they really can't go anywhere else. Generally, the strategy has been milking everything from the original three anime series for material to keep it going. But creatively, they're screwed these days. All responsibilities in terms of mecha and character design and plot are relegated to a couple of amateurs including Tommy Yune, if there really is more people besides him in that department. Outside of Shadow Chronicles, they have no experience in doing anything, period. And that's just commenting on the planning side, the funding part to make any of their ideas come true is even worse.

There's no heart in any of it, though I have to argue whether or not it existed in the first place; starting as an edit of three shows together in a haphazard way, covering it up with extra material after the fact, and sticking to prepared statements and stances defending it forever. But definitely what's happening now, all of it is a shallow reiteration of their glory days for profit. Until something pans out with WB and the LAM, it's going to be solely focused on merchandising, some recycled, of various quality. But if you want something with more substance, like a plot, dialogue, and development, don't count on it unless you want to buy Prelude to the Shadow Chronicles or another reprint of the 85 episodes again.

They soon caught the attention of the company that owned Robotech, Harmony Gold, which gave them an ultimatum: give up the fanzine or go professional as the “Official Fanzine” of Robotech.

I sweat o God - I have never seen a robber being so persistent in protecting his loot from other robbers. I mean - sh!t! Artists who actually create their own Intellectual Property are not usually as stubborn about "defending" it as Harmony Gold is about defending its' stolen bootlegged loot.

How can Robotech fans stand it?

Robotech fans were

- Lied to about the origins of Robotech
- Decieved into thinking there is no continuation of Macross
- Lied to about what constitutes anime
- Bullied and threatened

I mean...please... in the UK, TF fans created an entire comic book run - Transformers: The Continued Generation 2. People like Nick Roche, who now works at IDW as an artist, was one of the fans who did the art for the comic book.

It was sold for money (not at a profit, but to cover printing costs) - and everything was fine.

When the internet started up - tons of Fansites and fanfics and fanzines were developed.

Hasbro was super wise to let the fire spread and not stamp it out....

HG "gives ultimatums"

What the F...

What a bunch of morons.

They deserve to go bankrupt for treating their fans like this.

Jeezus.

What's next HG?

Maybe you want to install cameras in Robotech fans homes to see if...heavens forbid...they aren't using the Toynami products in a manner that goes against the Terms of Use on Robotech.com?

I mean - you know - I HAVE seen a couple of pictures here at Macrossworld of Toynami products interacting with...Yamato products! Hell - even with Bandai products (and Bandai did steal Macross from you - right...I mean... in Macross Frontier, there's a VERITECH fighter on top of Alto's school...you need to send Bandai an ultimatum about that, don't you?)

It's really not possible to stop talking about Doug Bendo under the auspicies of Doug being a troll, because judging from how HG as a company functions - they are the trolls.

Shadow Chronciles is 2 hours of trolling.

I'm just incredulous at how they operate. It's pathetic! smile.gif Some French kids get excited by their stupid show and create a magazine and they get an ultimatum!! smile.gif

Well that doesn't surprise me in the least.. they're still pulling the same poo today.
A few years back someone was planning to put together a Robotech anthology project which would be a collection of the best fan art and fan fiction, but HG was a complete dick about it, and wouldn't even give him permission.... yet when MEMO came up with an idea for a fanzine, they were going to let him go through with it..
What irks me is they won't let you do jack unless THEY have control of it. To me this is just stupid and shows how protective they are of their precious bootlegged show.

It's funny though because the fans are more talented than anyone in the HG staff.

I sense that this new incarnation of this thread has shed all remnants of civility... However - that said -I'll be the first to admit that after digesting the experience of the last thread - it's really difficult to be civil about the whole thing.

I mean - HG treats the source material for Robotech like a guy would treat a cheap hooker. They got it for cheap, screwed around with it, and refuse to acknowledge that it's been good to them.

Yeah - they "acknowledge" that the originals exist alright - but try talking about Macross- REALLY talking about Macross in their threads and you'll end up like Seto and all the rest.

The problem is that any discussion of Macross over at Robotech.com which ISN'T very shallow will get you into trouble. You're basically supposed to treat Macross as a third or fourth rate anime that the geniuses at HG turned into a supreme epic by combining it with two other third or fourth rate anime.

There are no big difference between Robotech's Macross Saga and Macross, and it is eminently clear that there's no point discussin the Japanese continuations of Macross on their own merits - because those are just obviously mediocre anime fodder at best, child pornography at worse.

Talk about dumb. Imagine if Hasbro treated Takara Tomy products like this. Imagine if Hasbro sent BBTS a letter saying "stop selling those Takara products!"

Imagine if Hasbro monitored fan websites and fanzines and...

ehh...

hell - I honestly can't think of anybody who acts like this.

Dag.

Even Lucas doesn't do this.

I remember when those Star Wars fans made Troops - unless I'm vastly mistaken - didn't Lucas praise them?

Jeesus - EVEN MICROSOFT ISN'T THIS ANAL.

Last year, on December 25th, Microsoft announced that it would allow something or other browsers or something to carry firefox or something or other (I'm not technically minded - sorry!) - for free in Europe.

Microsoft was going to fight it in European Courts - but somebody with brains over at Microsoft realized that protracted multibillion dollar court battles and bad PR were financially worse for the company than just agreeing to let people do what they were doing illegally anyways.

Because guess what - Microsoft actually makes MORE money from people's "illegal" activity than what they potentially loose on account of it - or even fighting it.

In any case - it was really cool - they hyped it as Microsoft's "Present to Billions of Citizens in the European Union."

Talk about a PR victory.

I - Joe Nobody, who knows nothing about computers - don't even know what the "it" was - but I heard that Microsoft chose to give it away for free to everybody instead of going to court over it. Great!

Obviously creators deserve their due for their creations, and IP and Copyright and patent holders deserve IP, Patent etc protection (generally property protection).

But if you open a MacDonalds franchise and put up a sign that says "Management reserves the right to turn you away if your ass is too big or your tits are too small" then... you are going to have a problem with customers.

Do you have the right to do it? Yep.

Does it make business sense? Nope.

HG makes no business sense. The way they run their show is lousy and amateurish.

I dunno..

I guess the only thing that sustains them is the ignorance of their own fanbase.

But then again - there's plenty of fans of things which I think are stupid. So I guess Robotech is just one more of those things...

Granted, it's not exactly easy to listen to all the tales of the outrageous injustices Harmony Gold is happily perpetrating against the Robotech fanbase (most of whom are guilty of nothing more than being ignorant or a bit too nostalgic) and, to a lesser extent, the Macross fanbase. At the very least, it's pretty much guaranteed to evoke a mixture of pity and disgust in the listener, if not outright dislike of the offending company.

An admirably succinct summary of the situation, yes... even after being essentially forced to own up to the fact that their grand epic and its great creative vision was in truth a hastily slapped-together rewrite done on the fly using shows which just happened to be lying around unused in Harmony Gold's catalog of licensed works, they still desperately want to say that their show is better, so they trot Carl Macek out to talk about how he "improved" Macross, and try to write the originals off as essentially a second-class story whose only real value is that it became part of Robotech. Yes, the people running Harmony Gold are habitual liars and, yes, easily classified as thieves... but we all knew that already.

Don't say that until you've actually had the displeasure of working with (or for) them... we don't call them the "Evil Empire" for nothing. That add-on to make the Windows Search Bar support Firefox was, if memory serves, the result of a court order stemming from the various monopoly proceedings against them in the EU. I don't think it was voluntary. They spun it as such, that's for sure...

Yes - this is true - but still - I'm just saying they were smart to spin it as such and now that my memory of this is slowly returning - I think they also did this to avoid a big fine or something...I dunno...

In any event - they presented it as their big Christmas present to people - and that was smart. Even the EU regulators went along with this presentation.

I don't know the nitty gritty of it - but my point was to just say that sometimes fighting for asanine IP rights means you'll be relegated to looking at yourself perform in the mirror in your bathroom.

If you make a show, a product, a what ever that gains mega popularity - it's inevitable that people are going to use it, ape it, copy it, etc etc etc etc

Either you look at this as lost revenue or you look at it as free marketing.

If you pick option 1, you will make your lawyers happy, as well as possibly journalists, while customers will not like you.

If you pick option 2, you will have to put your thinking cap on and figure out how to profit off of the free marketing.

Hasbro has wisely integrated with the fans and always supports local fandoms. Hell - even here in Poland, the local branch of Hasbro provides a server for the local Transformers fan site.

But they totally don't interfere in how people play with TFs. They also don't particularly find it evil that the website serves to advertise Bandai, Yamato and other products and other shows that are not Transformers.

It's really not so hard to comrehend how the internet works and what its' effect on marketing and so forth are. Harmony Gold are doing themselves a big disservice. It's horrible business.

Of course- I could be wrong. It could just be that there are millions of people out there who believe Robotech is the greatest story ever, and that the Toynami products are superb, and that I'm wrong and they're right.

Let's see if they have anything new to announce in their upcoming convention appearance this Jan. 30th.

The only thing left to cash in on is a Blu-ray release for ROBOTECH. I don't know if the show could benefit from Blu-ray quality rise, but HG would probably say it would anyway even if the difference from the DVDs is neligible.

I wouldn't get your hopes up. Their selling point are appearances from the usual suspects and Codename: Robotech, the promotional clip show that's not Global's Report.

I'll save people a lot of trouble from having to watch it:

an older Bilbo wouldn't be a bad idea, and I just can't see Tobey with that role..
but how old exactly are we talking? he couldnt be the same age as he is in the LOTR
maybe middle aged?

Finally, there is another potential franchise for Maguire to jump into, now that he's done slinging as Spider-Man: "Robotech." Maguire Entertainment and Warner Bros. picked up the rights to the '80s cartoon series about giant robot defenders back when the actor was still iffy about returning to the "Spider-Man" series. A "Robotech" movie would have to compete with continuing franchise "Transformers" and plans to bring "Voltron" to the big screen, so if the studio and Maguire are serious about their own mecha tentpole, they should get moving quickly. Especially now that Maguire has some room on his schedule for the next few years.

LOL you know that's going to end up as BIG NEWS on Robotech.com & Robotech X..
even though there's no mention of progress or if they even found a director :|

But who among us is actually surprised by this particular piece of news?

Nobody.

What a sad yet painfully predictable turn of events... Harmony Gold launches its big 25th anniversary convention tour with nothing to show for 25 years of mismanagement, ineptitude, failure, and a punishing lack of originality but a single direct-to-DVD movie that most of the anime industry ignored and the vague promise that there might be a live-action movie and another direct-to-DVD animated movie at some undefined point in the future. Their big plan for the 25th anniversary tour seems to be to trot out the same old guests they've been using since time immemorial, accompanied by a clip show everybody's seen before.

Oh I don't doubt that CAPTAIN CAPSLOCK and the rest of his band of merry morons will be all over this like flies on poo (a very apt analogy, don't you think?) as soon as they notice it... probably by reading it here. I'm sure they'll read a lot into it that isn't there... how soon d'you reckon we'll all be hearing all about how Tobey Maguire dropped out on the last Spider-Man movie to work on Robotech? Or that the cancellation of Spider-Man 4 is proof positive that Tobey's putting a higher priority on Robotech? I, for one, expect no end of horseshit claims from them based on this.

I do remember that...Perhaps the biggest contributor to that magazine should shed light on it here, but if he doesn't, I'll summarize. Basically, there were 2 main people working on the fan book. One of them had a critical eye for HG, or moreso it's way of running things and it's content. The other guy wanted to get HG's permission to do it as a licensed product, and basically the conversation was that they'd do it on the condition that the "troubled" person bow out. Nevertheless, he did, and after he was off the project, the other guy still got screwed. From what I remember in seeing it, it was a good project, and very interesting. They should've just put it out, instead of waiting for someone at HG who won't push a product unless it's his idea through. Then, when it gained enough interest on its own, they could've went to HG with a bit more bargaining power.

And yes, HP, you are right. If HG can't take control of it, then they won't have anything to do with it. Thus the reason why one of the collaborator's on that cool project had to leave. As far as Memo getting permission, unless there's signed docs saying that, they were probably just blowing smoke. Plus, they know that Memo doesn't really put that many projects together, except for ones that only cost him money, and HG has to do nothing. But again, that's the reason why you don't go to HG with anything. They'll screw you over, and won't even have the courtesey to use vasoline. That's why I never bothered ever doing projects with Robotech stuff. Just a waste of time, and creativity.

Oh Bilbo was an old shut-in till Gandalf coaxed him to an adventure with a some dwarves.

In LOTR he was 111 years old. In "The Hobbit" Bilbo was 50 years old.

Frodo himself at the beginning of LOTR was 33 years old.

Yeah I'm a book nut. That is why I was disappointed that Saruman and the Scouring of the Shire was left out.

That is just so... sad. I checked the link (http://www.aodsf.org/aod/robotech/) and it's amazing Carl Macek has nothing better to do.

Pretty accurate summary. What surprises me is Harmony Gold tried to pull the same stunt on the PA guys.

Also, what's this I hear about MEMO and Mav fidgeting around with trash cans?

Well, from his description on the site:

QUOTE
Currently Macek has been working in on a slate of original projects as well, including: WAR EAGLES – a novel and screenplay inspired by Merian C. Cooper’s unrealized masterpiece set just prior to the start of World War II; THE D’ARC – a high adventure tale set in pre-WWII Europe that falls somewhere between Raiders of the Lost Arc and The da Vinci Code; GIRL IN THE IVORY TOWER – an oriental fable - and several others.

If anyone wants to know more about these works:

War Eagles: Inspired by the Original Story by Merian C. Cooper, Creator of King Kong

The d'Arc (chapter 1 excerpt)

GIRL IN THE IVORY TOWER (screenplay)

And then there's the English version of Bleach, the anime. I'll stay neutral about these, but I don't know, something rubs me the wrong way about the Merian C. Cooper part. Also, notice one of the reviews for War Eagles.
