Frontier Valks

Valkyrie Driver

So, my recent toy purchases have me in somewhat of a quandry. I can't seem to decide which valk is my favorite in my collection.

Right now, it's between the Y/VF-19, the VF-171, and the VF-25F.

So here's why:

The Y/VF-19 has been my favorite valk for a long time but I'll focus on my VF-19F because it's a better toy. As a toy it's very close to the VF-19 aesthetically, but better. However, when compared to the frontier era valks it seems large and bulbous.

I've always been a fan of the VF-17 series, so naturally I love the VF-171.

The VF-25 is unique, since it is both familiar to many of its predecessors, and different from all of them. That's why I like it.

I can't make up my mind as to which is the coolest. What do y'all think?

Opinions! Here is some macross fluff. Not sure how canon this is.

The 19 series is crazy. There are few pilots that can pilot it effectively, hence so many test pilots deaths/failures. The reason for the pilot armor ejection seat flight suit for the VF-25 was to incorporate a system that allows the pilot to get the performance of a VF-19 without the immense physical strain.

I see that as saying the 19 is at the very least on par with the 25 performance-wise, but much more difficult to pilot.

Typing on phone. Perhaps others can elaborate.

Design wise, the YF-19 will always have a special spot on top for me.

Myself, I'm a big fan of the 19 series. There's just something about those forward swept wings that just screams "awesome" to me. Still need to grab a yf-19 somewhere, but that will have to wait some. The VF-17(1) and 25 are really good too, but still, the 19 has to come out on top for me.

I agree that the FSW is pretty cool, and the way the battroid mode looks is just heroic. I guess it just seems weird since the VF-19 is so much bigger than the VF-25, and it think the huge pauldrons on the VF-19F/S bug me.

I only have the Yamato v1 YF-19, which isn't terrible, but it's no arcadia, or VF-19F.

I have all three, that's the thing, I can't decide which to display most prominently in my collection, seeing as I have limited space and so many valks...

sorry but you may have posted this previously and or I just missed it.. but how many do you have now?

I would display the 19. You said its your fav and I see it as more of a centerpiece than the other two.

Since you are limited on space, I would change the displays out every month or every so many weeks. That would allow you display all of them at some point and give you the opportunity to transform them regularly and clean out your shelves.

I have a huge toy collection and as collectors we tend to want to display everything. But I think having limitations in terms of shelves, cabinets and space, etch are good things as they can force you to prioritize and interact with your collection more often if you decide to rotate pieces in and out of display.

9 plus a destroid in 1/60th scale, and 3 1/100's (VF-19S himetal, and 2 Toynami VF-1's). so 13 Macross toys as of now. I need to get a display case to maximize my space. And now that I count it up, It upsets me. I need another Valk, having an odd number will drive me bonkers.

That's a good point. I really wish I could get my hands on the Bandai VF-19 Advanced, that would be a great addition to my collection, as it would give me the Y/VF-19 toy I've always wanted (except for the arcadia) without breaking the bank.

I do have some stuff I'm trying to get rid of (not Macross) to free up some cash flow. I have a surplus store sitting in my living room right now.

Good point Mommar, I have a plan for a display case when I get one, I'll be splitting them up by era, Zero valks on one shelf, SDFM Mechs on another, M+/M7 mechs on another, and then the frontier valks. The blue and white is very striking, I will admit, and the M+/M7 era is where most of my valks are from (4 of them), so they will likely be the centerpoint of my display.

I can't shake the elegance of the frontier valks though, they're so slim and lithe, but they look deadly at the same time.

I'm not going to lie, I'm trying to figure out which is my favorite.

That's a good idea! I have done this myself and I think it helps things looks a better organized. Although the only ones which kinda look out of place are my M-Zero stuff which are currently mixed in with my M7 stuff.. But now I will have to get a few more cabinets for each separate lot to allow for expansion and reduce congestion!

The Frontier Valks do look a lot more toned or athletic don't you think!?

The v1 VF-25 looked like it's pants were too short (not an issue on the renewal), the M7 valks look like they're wearing bell bottoms (not as bad as gundam though), But the renewal line of MF valks looks darn good. Yeah, toned and athletic does seem to fit...

So I just discovered something about my VF-171EX (and by just I mean just, only about a minute or so ago), that's a small detail, that automatically makes the toy so much better in my eyes. Maybe making it my favorite, the back panel that has thee wings, snaps into the rear neck guard. This takes the floppy battroid that I though it was, and locks it up tight(er), making the battroid mode nice a solid under handling.

I didn't know what trick the guy on Collection DX used to make it stay together, but now I do. The VF-19F just got relegated(not really, but I do like the slender looks of the Frontier valks better) to the shelf.

The 19 is still a classic, and still a favorite, but the VF-171 is newer, and doesn't suffer the space samurai robot aesthetic (with the over large pauldrons, they're a bit more toned down than the 19F, more like the Y/VF-19/A).

The VF-19 will figure prominently in my display, but it'll be in the case, where the 171 will probably spend most of it's time not in the case. That is when I get a display case.
