VF-11 PAK FA

electric indigo

Recommended Posts

I finally managed to get some good shots of my 1/72 Hasegawa VF-11, dressed in a PAK FA inspired camo scheme.

I smoothed out some of the irritating details on the nose, closed the opening for the head cannon and replaced the pilot, everything else is OOB. Good Hasegawa kit of a great design. The details on the hull feel a little under-inspired compared to what they put on the wings, but I'm glad they didn't have another rivet-fest like on their VF-1s.

Thank you all.

Petar, the kit is not overly complicated, but also not a shake-n-bake model. Some putty was required at the closed landing gear doors, which was to be expected, and on the halves of the engine tunnels/legs. The lower legs have little contact area to glue. I encourage you to try all kinds of color/camo schemes on this plane (Model Grafix turned the two-seater into a Vietnam-era bomber), and yes, it's painted entirely with custom mixed Tamiya acrylics.

Wow!!! Simply perfect electric indigo - such subtlety in the weathering... I love it, how did you do it on the solid camo panels? It seems like a lightening of towards the centre of each panel. Very realistic for a "new" aircraft and awesome photoshop job, you nailed the light/shadows down! Beauty, you should be proud. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the appreciation, guys.

wm cheng, I did indeed spray a lighter color in the center of each panel, in a slightly cloudy application. It is very subtle on the model and I'm surprised it even showed up in the photos. Panel lines were accentuated with dark grey gouache.

I chose colors with a reduced contrast compared to the original russian scheme so the beautiful lines of the aircraft didn't get disrupted too much.

The effect looks fantastic, and I can only imagine how it must look better in real life. What do you mean "slightly cloudy application"?

Awesome job and composite work! I should make it my wallpaper at work and see how many people ask "which plane is that!?" I think the boom operator would be like, "Uh, where's the receptacle?" - MT

@all - thanks again

The base color is lightened up and thinned, then I spray very close to the surface in an irregular pattern. You can see the effect better in this pic of my Kotobukiya Aaliyah, especially on the legs.
