Macross Ace

The numbers probably did the magazine in. I don't pretend to know what counts as a successful print run for these kinds of publications, but the Japanese wiki page says that the 2009.01 issue had a print-run of 120,000. Sounds big, but when one compares it to the 2,790,000 print run of Weekly Shonen Jump, it pales quickly (admittedly the uber popular Shonen Jump is not the best publication to compare a niche Macross Ace to.)

A successful print run would be, as you could probably guess, where the number sold is near or greater than the number printed (probably somewhere around 50%+ to 75%). Since the printer only prints in batches, they obviously will print more than they can sell so whatever doesn't sell is returned to the distributor. At the same time, stores will only order (in batches) what they can sell and request more or less depending on sales.

So if Shonen Jump sold anywhere between 1.6-2 million issues of those 2,790,000, that's probably a good number. For a more focused publication like Macross Ace, I'd be a little more lenient on the numbers but if it isn't doing better than say 60% in sales from a 120,000 issue run and consistently shows decreasing number of sales from no one buying or fewer stores ordering copies, then yeah, we're looking at cancellation. Yes, I'm making these numbers up but I'm sure the publisher uses a similar idea.

That seems logical to me. Interesting.

Well...the good news is that nearly all of the comics (except for Macross 7th Code and some of the gag mangas) have been collected in book form, so you don't need to download scans, you can buy them legally. ^_^

I was joking, I'd buy other art/visual books/master files but not something that you need to follow a story in a language that I can't understand (yet)

Same for movies/anime

Why not? I started buying manga when I was 13, well before I started studying Japanese, and it was usually pretty easy to follow the stories.

Same with anime.

Again, I was THIRTEEN when I was "reading" manga...pretty much everyone my age who was into anime and manga in the '80s was forced to do the same, and we were all okay.

I wonder what the problem now is?

So you understood everything without knowing japanese? I wish I was from that generation then, at that age I could barely differenciate one "symbol" from another.

I've completed several japanese games though, even RPG's, since you can get used to them very quick after trying all the options.

Enough sad chat-talk :D

I'll echo Gubaba with: I was also "reading" untranslated manga by the beginning of Junior High School or Senior High School. Also rented a few anime raw, which were rented from the local Japanese import food store (the anime was taped off of Japanese TV, and sent in the mail to the store).

... and am also wondering why people are less inclined to go outside the box of conventionalism and challenge themselves.

I guess Gubaba and you are talented then, because I've tried, really, and the only thing I got was frustration, It's like spoiling yourself while "reading" or watching something. I know a few words (spoken) and expressions in japanese, but I cant figure out anything with just spare words.

I´d buy official Macross material if it was translated to english anytime. (it's clear that my native language is not english though)

I will study and do the right thing, and support my loved Macross as your signature says, but for now...

Not everything, obviously, but enough to follow the story.

And it's not talent, it was necessity. There was no other way to "read" or watch this stuff. NO ONE was translating ANYTHING.

Would you buy it if I sent you a detailed synopsis to go along with it?

Just keep in mind: if the manga is drawn half-decently, like a good action movie, you don't even need to read to understand the basic story.

With Macross the First it's even better, as we already know the story (SDFM + DYRL)! So, even without looking at the manga art, let alone reading anything, we can guess the story. ;)

Nice. Hopefully the interest in it will mean that it gets picked up and published in another publication (if only to conclude it, at the very least).

I can do without the Macross Plus TAC Name though...
