Sad but a sign of the times, many smaller companies can no longer compete with the Bandai, Takara Tomy, online shops, yodobashi, etc of today.

Have seen tons of hobby, toy and anime related stores close down in my neighbourhood, 1 left from 15.

The last private is on its way out as the owner(76) sez no more kids step by the to consoles and handhelds.

I don't understand why kids don't play with toys anymore. What are they doing then?

They are glued to computers ;) I know it's a generalization on my part but it's a growing trend.

Well toddlers do play with toys but when they grow older they just want to play with the computer or video game consoles. You give them a toy and they get bored very fast.

I guess we as adult collectors appreciate all the love put into high end collectables.

IMO -- at a basic level - the computer, or games, consoles, do more for you so you have to do less.

Less imagination on your part, less energy expended. Its human nature ( for the most part ) to gravitate towards the easiest route for everything.

Wonder what affect that will have over time on the future?

------

As far as CMs - They took on many obscure titles and releases which I admired them greatly for.

But the quality was so suspect that I eventually wrote off anything they are coming out with - no matter how much I wanted it.

So that is not a good way to pull in more sales . . .

This.

Everything I've ever bought from CM's while cool to look at always suffered from falling limbs, loose limbs, broken limbs, or badly painted. I wish I gotten some more Gashapon figures from them, but oh well.

I've never owned anything CM's. I always liked the way the Dark Legioss looked (especially the drone version) but the reviews always kept me away.

I wonder if the physical toy market is falling out all over or only in Western countries?

A company that was so closely related with overpriced QC ridden and badly design/unfinished toys couldn’t hope to stay alive in this day and age. Their releases had long been associated with clearance sale fodder. You can’t expect people to pay 15.000-20.000 yen over the years for products that more often that not ended up on a 70% sale a few months later.

CM had a lot of potential, and were there before the marked became as saturated as it is now but they blew it by cutting corners in their releases. How they handled the Mospeada license is a clear example; their Legioss & Tread only had the hated Toynami Alpha and the at the time vapourware Beta as competition… and they made a Legios with weird legs and without a single locking part that could not attach to the Tread beyond a half assed trolley… for freaking 28.000 yen. Not to mention their fiddly and crumbling ride armors.

When it looked like they were starting to get their crap together it was too late. And the QC control ridden Grendizer was the final nail on their coffin (for gods sake, damn thing even came with rusted screws!…). It’s a wonder they stayed so long in business but their luck had to run out some day. Really sad that the lasted this long chucking out soso action figures when Beagle had made a near perfect product with their ride armors and folded soon after.

Today small companies better make high quality products for the high prices they ask or get sucked under; Fewture is making better products and Sentinel, a very young company, has been knocking every one of their Riobot line releases out of the park since day one. Now it's their time.

For all we know there's already a new company that these guys are going to be doing the same kinds of toys for. Bankruptcy maybe just a way to wipe the debt clean.

Read a rumor that part of them jumped ship some time ago to create Evolution Toys.

The designs are also action figures and magnet joints for stuff that combines. The product pics with the grey textured background also reminds of the style CM used.

Was never impressed by the output of CM Corporation. The blog reviews of the CM products were always really critical of what they made. I pretty much avoided CM because of the bad word of mouth. So this seems like chickens coming home to roost as it were

As far as predictions about the end for the world because kids don't play with toys, I think Harrelson's Martin Hart character from True Detective said it best:

"You know, throughout history, I bet every old man probably said the world keeps getting worse. Yet old men die, and somehow the world keeps on spinning." :)

It's different this time, this old man isn't saying the world is going to end. Even the almighty Hasbro has said they are a finite company if they don't shift to interactive toy lines. With the Star Wars and TF lines they are hitting the 3-5year old market, jumping the middle ground, and saving a few things for the 25-45 year old "collector/inevergrewup" crowd. Once that crowd moves out and on.. It's just the 3-5 market of big easy to play with figures.

There will be a time, when instead of buying an actual toy, you'll just buy the right to play it in a virtual like world.

Just as someday you won't be buying DVD's, but just the rights to watch it on your TV.

The day is coming, and fast. The nostalgia crowd who likes displaying stuff will die off, and the spoiled brats of the entitlement generation will get their instant gratification fix through virtual reality and holograms.

CM's stuff was hit or miss. Mostly miss. I will never forgive them for what they did to Mekanda. However, their Patlabor Ingrams are great toys, and they were the only company that ever made a figure of the Peacemaker labor. RIP CM's, I was rooting for you (just so you could release that Zillion Tri-Charger).

Never saw a cm toy I wanted to buy.

And don't say small companies can't compete, just put out a good product.

Sentinel is small but they have, in my opinion, put out the best robot toys so far this year. Also their toys sell fast and have a good reputation for quality.

Make a good product and the cash will follow.

Survival of the chogokinininest.

I loved their Mospeada stuff, as flawed as it was, and it certainly was, they have the highest history of releases regarding Mospeada. Their Patlabors are awesone as well and I doubt any company has released that many Patlabor toys altogether. Their MAS releases, namely PeaceMaker and Broken, were total junk though, but they still look good and make a great display set with the rest of CM's Labors.

Overall a great legacy remains in my collection, I'm glad I got their items and I doubt another company will ever commit to these 2 animes the way CM's corp did.

Maybe this is what will shortly happen to all toy companies, but I think there will always be a place for a cool items people can grab or display. 3D printing era is just around the corner and next decade might see it becoming a very common and popular home device.

CM's was a terrible company that made garbage products from properties nobody cared about anyways. I'm not sure how anyone is surprised that they're out of business or how this reflects on the state of the toy industry as a whole.

I enjoy their Legios/Tread combo. Not as nice as the Toynami Beta and got 3 of the Dark Legioss from the HLJ clearance. Not bad.
