Macross Mecha Manual Updated

Recommended Posts

Epic thread bump!

Any word on when there's going to be a new section for the two MacF movies? I'm starting to get intrigued by the specs on the YF-29, tornado pack, and the super pack on the VF-27.

I'll level with ya here... I have no bloody idea.

Actually, this is (part of) a topic that's come up a lot lately in my chats with other Macross Mecha Manual contributors. I've been importing the relevant art books and other materials to put together sections for the Macross Frontier movies and the new stuff from Macross the Ride, and trying to stay on top of things with my own translations, but I'm uneasy about the idea of editing M3 without first getting the go-ahead from Mr March. It's his site, after all... I just provide the administrative services and some of the translations and art stock and the like. It's been a few weeks since I last talked to him, but when I do I'll be sure to raise the subject and see what we can do. I've got the site design know-how to do most of it myself, but the art side of things (like image clean-up) is entirely beyond my skill set. There's also been a little talk about how to treat stuff from manga like the Macross 7 Trash series or Macross the First.

I've also put a little time in against the task of going over M3's existing coverage to see what needs to be updated/revised, and there are a bunch of other updates that are basically ready to roll... enhancements to the Macross II section, and a whopping 216 pieces of fan art by Flaming Guantlet that are long overdue to go up.

Cool. Just wanted to know if anything was coming down the pike. Thanks for the update.

Yeah, there is... it's just a matter of catching up to Mr March and cornering him long enough to get him to either build the new section out with the material I've collected for him, or at least give me the go-ahead and .psd files to do it myself. What I've got "on deck" right now in terms of art stock and/or translations includes:

Adding Frontier mecha and vehicles to the manual would be great. It's been awhile since any update, and the site is great to get lineart from.

Actually, that's another thing for which improvements have been talked about... specifically, cleaner, higher-quality scans of the mecha from Macross Frontier.

Speaking of... if anyone knows of a publication that contains reasonably large, clean art or CG models for Michel's VF-25G w/ Tornado Packs and/or the version of the VF-171 Nightmare Plus w/ the EX version's super packs from Sayonara no Tsubasa, please shoot me a PM telling me what book or what magazine and issue so we can import that in the near future.

Oh, you should add the ARMD seen in M7T, too.

Linky w/ piccy: http://www.macrossro...RMDalt.htm#2038

Huh, I'd forgotten about that one. Yeah, definitely. That should go in the Macross 7 section if, as has been proposed, we're gonna add stuff from M7T to the site.

Might as well. Add as much Macross content as possible, and give visitors the choice of deciding which things fit in their version/vision of the Macross universe.

Now that's something that Talos and I talked about at some length...

Right now, the Macross Mecha Manual's basically only covering what's unambiguously canon in Macross, barring a few minor entries over in the Game and Advanced Valkyrie section. One the the things Talos was eagerly pitching was the idea that we could/should add another section for alternate continuity and manga materials. Stuff like Macross the First's special versions of the VF-1D and VF-1J, Kamjin's ship with the tentacles, that sort of thing, maybe some of the stuff from Macross Mechatronics, unused but polished concept art like Kazumi Fujita's VF-XS Valkyrie II concept that showed up in Animage before Macross II came out. It's definitely a possibility, but it's one we gotta explore with His Marchness before we proceed.

I'll have to look through my books. I have a pretty loaded library of books, magazines, and non-Macross specific print that has a lot of Macross art in them. Perhaps I can help you find what you're looking for. I assume that the mecha you're looking for isn't in the Chronicles publications, so maybe in the movie books that were released?

Even if those alternate sections had non-canon disclaimers, or whatnot, it'd be great to be able to find everything, and I mean everything. I actually went there yesterday, hoping to find a section on weapons specifically, which would be another great feat to pull off. Being able to find stuff like the GU-11D, the capabilities of the missiles in Mac Plus, and so on, would be great as well. While I don't expect all that, it's cool that you guys are still being attentive to the site. Some of the list of valks you had up there from Macross the Ride don't have line art, would you simply just put in the pics of the model kits?

Likewise, I've got a pretty extensive library to draw on... my main timeline collection's grown by leaps and bounds now that I've finished my Macross II research. You'd be correct in your assumption... none of the Macross Frontier movie stuff is printed in Macross Chronicle (or I'd have it covered already). The annoying part is that it's not in the movie art books either. I was kinda hoping that they got printed in a magazine article somewhere (maybe a Newtype issue, or Great Mechanics, I know they're not printed in DX.17), but I've had no luck turning up clean art of Michel's VF-25G w/ Tornado Packs or the movie version of what the series called the VF-171EX.

Look forward to seeing the update. Hey Seto Kaiba, are you still going to do your Macross II site?

Yes and no... I've got most of the material written and waiting to be reviewed by helpful souls like Talos, but the site design has been moving at a slower pace than I'd like because I've been absolutely slammed at my day job. We're strongly considering an alternative approach that would expand the coverage into the "main timeline" too, sort of as a characters and continuity version of what M3's done for mecha.

It does, but we're putting a priority on the Macross II stuff... since all the translation legwork on that is done. It's just a matter of finding the free time to finish the web design portion of things. Maybe over the holiday break, since the free time I was supposed to have this past week or two vanished into a minor family emergency.

  • 2 months later...

Hey all, sorry there hasn't been much as far as updates to the Macross Mecha Manual. Real life has kept me away from Macross for a while. I appreciate all the continued interest and I want to assure everyone I am willing to continue work on the website. In fact, despire not actively working on the site for many months, I still have a substantial amount of unpublished material waiting to be added to the website. Lucky for me I keep it all chronciled in the offline website "updates" page. Otherwise I'd have forgotten what I had already worked on myself and not yet released, LOL :)

Truth be told, the biggest hurdle preventing me from work on the Macross Mecha Manual website is my lack of a scanner. WIthout a scanner, I can't add new material or revise old work. When I got my new computer last year (my first in 9 years...YAHOO!), I sadly lost the capabilities of my old scanner. Long story short, the move from a 32-bit operating system (Windows XP) to a 64-bit operating system (Windows 7) has made my old desktop scanner impossible to operate, even in a VM environment. What's worse, I purchased and then had to return a new 64-bit scanner because it's incapable of higher than 600 DPI via the SOFTWARE (despite the scanner itself being HARDWARE capable of 4000+ DPI). As I've explained previously, I work in very high resolutions because I want the Macross Mecha Manual to be ejoyable in the decades to come as monitor resolutions increase. Typically I build my colored artwork in sizes from 3,000 to 4,000 pixels in size, which should keep the M3 relevant for the next decade or two (I hope!). Unfortunately that means I need a 1,200 or higher DPI scanner (in software AND hardware) to continue building ultra-high resolution colored art. Few people know about scanners in depth, so I've had a very hard time trying to find what I'm looking for and make it work. I'm going to look into a new scanner again, but if anyone has any insight or tips about scanners (especially the software side of getting high DPI scans from your scanner), don't be shy.

A big thanks to everyone for keeping track of all the new stuff from the Macross Frontier movies. I've not even had the chance to see any of the new films myself, so I'm very much out of the loop right now. I can't wait to dive back into Macross.

Hey all, sorry there hasn't been much as far as updates to the Macross Mecha Manual.

As soon as I can pin you down on MSN, that will change. I've been importing art books like mad to stay on top of things. ^_^

(I've also got around 200 pieces of fan art that need to go up...)

Okay, i'll try to get online soon to chat. It'll be great to catch up.

Here's a little piece of some of the unreleased material I completed; an Old vs. New comparison of the VB-6 Konig VF-X2 Alternate Colors.

Great job as always Mr. March. I can't wait to see what you bring forth as content for the Macross the Ride. Pics, pics, and more pics!!

BTW - Were you ever aware, in the Macross (TV) there is a squadron that appears two instances, known as the "Persimmon Squadron" (Orange-ish/Red accent colors). Both times they are sent out as first wave response and immediately get blown to bits. IIRC, they apprear somewhere between episode 25 -27. The colors on them are like that of the "Alaska Base".

Check it out.

I was not aware of this variant. Fro obvious reasons, the minor variants can be rather hard to catalog because of their blink-and-miss-it nature. If you have any pictures, please let me know.

Gifs of what? Gifs of the vehicles in the list Seto posted?

Major Update - We Remember Love!

It has been five years since the last update to the Macross Mecha Manual and it is time to remember some mecha love. Despite a lengthy absence, today marks the largest update ever completed for the website. The combined total of debut profiles and revised profiles amount to over 250 new individual pieces of artwork featured across the website. I do appreciate all the emails and love fans have for the website, but please remember the M3 is an archive (not an active news or community website) so updates will remain infrequent.

Today's update to the Macross Mecha Manual features 63 new profiles.

The task for this latest update is to share colored Macross artwork unavailable elsewhere. In much the same way the Zentradi artwork was improved, numerous other mecha are now showcased with enhanced colored art. It is my hope the new colored art will continue to distinguish my website from others and from the artwork found in official publications like the Macross Chronicle. Similarly, all gun pods and missiles site-wide have been revised with new scans and enhanced coloring to give these memorable weapons a place to shine. Other additions include improved black and white line art sections with some new line art pieces not previously featured on the M3 website.

There are two standout features in this update. First is the debut of the Macross Technical Manual, a new dedicated webpage for all fan-made analysis and technical guides about the Macross universe. The debut of this webpage features an article discussing the "Firepower of the GU-11 Gun Pod". The second standout feature of the update is the presentation of fan-made artwork by the talents of Jeff Sorley, Neldorwen, lazyMK, Daniel Dugarte/vectormz and others. These artists have created line art that has either been redrawn from rare published source books or they have drawn completely original pieces based upon the animation. This update features dozens of these pieces for fans to enjoy.

Another feature in this update is the revision of common/support vehicles. Since variable fighters, robots and ships are the stars of the Macross series those designs were prioritized for the Macross Mecha Manual. Most other vehicles were added only to provide a varied catalogue of content. Lacking sources for Macross line art and color reference meant many of these common/support vehicles were featured in tiny, poor-quality scans with inaccurate colors. Now with a much larger book collection at my disposal, many vehicles have been scanned in high resolution and feature superior colors. I have also added a small portion of new vehicles - some not found colored in any Macross publication - to once again add a little variety to the website catalogue.

Still other features of note in this update come thanks to the release of the Macross franchise on the Blu-Ray format. The benefit of these High Definition releases is access to sharp, vivid color reference from which to build better art for this website. All pre-existing screenshots site-wide have been upgraded to High Definition and numerous new additional screenshots have been added, many of which help highlight those blink-and-miss vehicles that some viewers may have overlooked.

A few final additions to round out the update are several new profiles for the More Mecha section. These additions feature mechanical designs from Neon Genesis Evangelion and The Vision of Escaflowne.

As always, make sure to Refresh the webpages you view and/or clear your browser cache to view the new pictures that have replaced existing artwork.

Thanks, it's important that I include as much accurate reference as possible, in the best quality possible.

I hope you like the new "Destroid Work" colored art in the Macross Frontier section, given that it is your avatar :)

Thanks for saying so. I really appreciate the thanks from fans. It's always good to hear. And I'm really glad it's something folks really enjoy.

Thank for saying so, it means a lot. Make sure to carefully go over the site and refer back to the "Updates" for a comprehensive list of all the new material. There is so much in this update to see. You don't want to miss any of it.

Primus1X

There were hundredes of corrections and revisions to do for the written trivia as well. I worked hard to try to credit as many designs directly to the artists as I could. Junya Ishigaki's credits were all revised. I also tried hard to correct grammar and spelling where I could. And of course, add as much accurate, official trivia as is possible. The Macrosspedia not only features a lot of NEW entries, but dozens of the existing entries have been corrected/revised/expanded. With as many citations as possible, so fans can cross reference the content.

Thank you for the kind words. I hope this update is worthwhile for you and everyone.
BTW, if you ever notice anything that might need a correction, don't be shy. Let me know :)

It was never my intention to take so long for this next update, but that's all on me. I just wish I had so much more time for the site. If only I could get paid to do this :)
There is a LOT to look at and much to read. So make sure to take your time and enjoy!
