Yes, I'm playing the limited modes they have for now. I've downloaded the Arena thing they released about 5-6 months back. Haven't touched it recently, but I'm totally on board with the game. I purchased a ship package about a year ago, a Ghost Hornet 7C or something. I've got a few friends that are into it as well and we'll be playing as a group come release. THink I'm going to stick with that until the actual game is released before buying anything else. Not into spending hundreds of dollars until I know this is something I'm going to want to spend lots of hours playing.

Do you have to pay anything to download the game?

I'm not sure how it works. I think you can play the game, but you have to pay to get a ship. I'm not sure how the full game will work. Packages can be really cheap or they can be really expensive, depending upon how much you want to spend.

The eventual full package is supposed to fully support modding and private servers, so while I do have a moderate interest in the base game, I'm eagerly waiting to see what can be done with the game engine.

What I'm hoping for is that this might turn into a modder's playground, and over time, have player-made conversion content and add-ons for every major science fiction universe in existence. :)

The previews so far have me dying for a few full-blown Macross craft, including transformation. With all the moving parts and physics demonstratins so far, it looks very possible to do.

I think Cloud Imperium Games really needs to do a better job communicating to consumers that the price point to get into the game is actually lower than every other $60 Triple A title. You can buy a Star Citizen package for as low as $45 to get the full game and your starter ship. Everything else you see being sold on their website will eventually be available for purchase using in-game currency, just like any other CRPG-style game. So if you want that sexy $250 ship, simply buy a $45 package to start and earn fictional credits to purchase that expensive ship just by playing the game.

But I suppose Cloud Imperium haven't bothered marketing Star Citizen with the entry-level package because - as we can see from the current total of $77 million in crowdfunding - they don't need to :)

That is rather cool. I like the more I see from the non-combat type vessels. I really want to see how the non-combat parts of the game play, if they are any fun. If they can make them work, I feel that will be one of the best selling points of the open world.

CitizenCon was AWESOME

They showed A LOT of thing and the casting for the game... incredible.

Also consider using my referral code STAR-TC2F-JDFV if you want to help a fellow Macross fan in the 'verse

Oh yeah, the Sabre is totally Macross-inspired for sure. In some of the making of videos, there's been mention of Macross before. I think most of us knew it was inevitable that at least one Macross-styled craft was destined to appear in the game.

Given how they're designing stuff with all kinds of moving parts, I'd assume it's only a matter of time before we get full-fledged valks built for the game.

I stil think my personal interests are going to be hugely focused on modding, but the official game universe is looking better all the time. :)

I also love how he's been repeatedly digging at the Wing Commander fans, re-using ship names from the olden days.

Don't forget Morrow's tour of the Idris!

And yes, the characters look like crap right now, but they are very much a work in progress. If I recall correctly, one of the devs said that even Admiral Bishop in the senate speech video was put together in the matter of weeks and they said he was about 75% done at that stage.

Here's a link to the actual star map in case anyone had trouble finding it and wanted to check it out for themselves. It's impressive to say the least. Works fine for me in Firefox, but had issues in Chrome.

Thanks!

To think you can walk around that ship meanwhile out there dozen of player fly spaceships or are engaging in combat in first person trying to board you... it's amazing.

Can't wait.

Well, they're developing almost all the tech to make this kind of game, so it's a risky bet. I think they have the talent (And the money) to make the game and release it, but they are going to sacrifice some of the promises made during the original campaign. Planetary landing seamless from space looks nice and a lot of games are implementing right now. But how well this is gonna to translate with hundreds of players?

They raised the bar too high, true.

Now we wait and see.

While I love a lot of the stuff they've shown in SC, I've been extremely skeptical that Roberts can deliver on these mountains of promises he's been making since the kickstarter began. I remain very cautiously optimistic and I refuse to sink a single dollar until the game is nearing completion.

I was thinking less "because they'll never meet all their promises" and more along the lines of "because then the donation train would stop."

Very cautiously optimistic.

Same here.

Any thoughts?

I've been very leery of putting any of my money into this game, no matter how awesome it looks and sounds. This is exactly what was going through my mind when considering it: there's too many promises being made.

I don't really consider it "funding development" at this point.

As near as I can tell, they actually have a released game and are selling subscriptions, like any other MMO. They even have a free trial event going on now.

As I intimated before, I don't believe they will ever change labels from "crowdfunded development" and into "product release", no matter what the reality of their business model is. They like holding a record for most money raised from a crowdfunding campaign, and will do their best to keep it growing.

It's a very special case. The guy is disabled so he backed the game to play with VR, but until now the game don't support the tech so the guy gets tired of waiting and asked for a refund. because he never downloaded the client he was right in claiming it.

Everythiing is OK then, the problem are the changes they made to the TOS to negate refunds to those who played the different modules of the game. A lot of people is pissed and some groups (Goons) are boicoting the project.

I'm not worry about the game itself, I'm pretty sure they will deliver it when it's done.

Looking GOOD.

A lot of Star Wars and Mad Max vibes in this gameplay... and this is only a tiny place in a huge planet.

... oh and someone get the DUNE reference...? is very subtle :p

I'd hope so. Apparently they've made large advances in OCS (Object Container Streaming), which should give some serious performance/network boosts. I'll give it another shot once the new patch with OCS is in and see if my computer will handle it without exploding.
