One more quick display question: Detolf Glass Door Curio?

I read in a review they aren't closed off and still collect dust.. making me think it's pointless to even have them.

Any experience? Is it worth the price if they let dust in to just have your toys out on display?

Thanks.

They get dusty, but it takes awhile, and I doubt anyone ever keeps things exactly the same all the time.

Everytime I change anything I dust and windex.

You could buy adapters at hardware stores that slide on the glass and would bridge the gap better.

You still can't beat a 70$ Detolf.

I wouldn't worry about dust. just keep a can of air around and give them a spray once a month or so. why is he charging you $100 when it retails for $65?

I'm assuming he paid shipping, which is like $150 bucks to our area. Idk. He said he was firm on $100 so... I might just wait around until I visit my parents and swing by the Ikea near their house in a few months.

I could just do that without the case though :D

Just had my first experience with Ikea and the way delivery is set up. Among other things I had (2) Detolf shelves delivered and I will tell you the boxes are ridiculously heavy. So whether or not you opt for shipping/delivery or to pick one up yourself keep that in mind.

I've had them for about a week and they're not fully stocked w items so I can't speak for long term exposure, but they've done a good job keeping dust out as compared to something just laying around.

Assembly is also really easy, about 30-40 minutes each, put together on my own.

Good luck w your choice.

I think the detolf is about 50 kg in weight. I lifted one myself to my room. If you have installed the plastic thingies at the bottom, it is actually easier to slide around.

How do you like yours?

Detolfs are 42.3 kg, or 93 lb!

when I bought 3 at once I thought I was a freaking weakling because I couldn't move them easily, but then I realized they weighed almost 100 lb and have a slim box made of slippery cardboard which has NO good gripping points.

If I hadn't put my dolly in my trunk I would've been dead meat when I bought 3 at once from Ikea. when I got home I carried them in parts upstairs and put them into my man-cave / office. Assembly is really easy and after you built one the others come together like 10x faster.

They look great for the price. Of course if you can afford better you can get some even more kickass curios like Kicker has

you should give craigslist or ebay a look..... I found 3 black Detolfs for 45 dollars each and I convinced the guy to give me all 3 for 100 bucks!!!! But i had to drive like an hr. to get them, take them apart and then build them back up. Apparently this family guy had a close friend that collected Disney Statues. The guy passed away and his friend was left with all his collectibles......I guess i lucked out! these things are nice to make your collection look organized with all the surrounding glass.... Good luck!

They are stuck on 100 for 1.

Think I'll just swing by Ikea and get one when I visit my parents next month, or look at other options. I want the black wood and not the light brown too.

But yeah erikos, that's a good deal haha

I've always been curious as to whether anyone actually uses Detolfs for anything *other* than displaying action figures, toys, collectibles, and related merchandise. To see what I mean, just google "detolf" and select image search!

well, they are display cases. toys, collectable and related merchandise pretty much covers everything you'd want to display in your home.

He probably tightened the screws that hold the Glass too too tight until it took a dump on his face...lol Those things have to be treated gently. I was totally scared when i had to break 2 of them down, and load 1 assembled into my little 2 door Golf GTI!!!! And then i had to drive 1 hour back to my house thru the bumpy streets of Seattle... and...... the coilovers (low suspension) on my car didnt help! :)

Scary stuff! lol :o but it worked out fine~

Yes, but outside of toy collecting, most people use curios for things like vases, china, pottery, porcelain knick-knacks -- basically stuff I associate with old ladies. I've only ever seen Detolfs used to display toy collections.

why not acrylic? Organic glasses or called PMMA? you can have a metal basement to add stability and it's more durable than normal glasses.

Probably cost more, but I would rather have acrylic plastic over glass.

lol yes they are heavy as hell (93 lbs i think?) in the box. i bought 2 at a time the first time and it was a b*tch to carry that myself and i'm not a small guy. There's just no good way to hold the box, no handles etc. anyway i think for the price, they cannot be beat. yes you have to dust....but it'll be 2 maybe 3 timesa year vs. monthly if stuff just sits out. Also, they are glass and also have a slight tint (they are dipped i thnk?) so I think they do at least offer some UV protection too (even clear glass offers some). My biggest complaint is also width. Not wide enough. if they made a double or tripled wide i'd jump all over that. There are better displays out there.....but not for $65 there aren't.

As I stated before I'm not a huge fan of the Detolf cabinets. But after a bit of research I found this in the IKEA catalogue:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40176342/#/00176344

Does anyone on the board know if this is a viable solution for displaying Valkyries?

The windows look a little bit small on the image but that can be misleading. Size-wise it seems ok to me.

I bought some customized lock for the detolf from ebay. I like it alot but wished they could be wider for bigger toys.

I see. The lock is on the top. There are some that you stick to the glass on the door and side glass.

One thing I don't like about the Detolfs are that the do a bad job keeping the dest outside. But the main reason is that I really like wood and hate the plastic wood imitate finish of most IKEA furniture with a passion. :)

A few moth back someone posted a nice cabinet but that was like $2000 iirc which is a bit too expensive for me at the moment and I wanted something similar.

How many old ladies do you know that shop at Ikea in general?

Since this thread is regarding the Detolf case. What do you guys think looks better for the lock?

1) The no drill lock that you peel and stick to the glas http://www.technologylk.com/product_view.aspx?product_ID=8565

2) The one you screw to the wood on the top or bottom http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GLASS-CABINET-LOCK-IKEA-DETOLF-ARGOS-DISPLAY-CABINET-/310395248509
