New thread! Keep it going.

Watched the 6th movie for Break Blade. This show is too epic. I'm just abit annoyed that

Girghe seemingly kicked the bucket unceremoniously and they didn't show him kicking Borcuse's butt.

And the Riobot Delphine looks pretty impressive.

I recently watched Highschool of the Dead. I really enjoyed the show and liked how it approached a zombie apocalypse. The way it starts out is how I imagine a zombie apocalypse would actually start. There was some fanservice throughout the series that I didn't really care for; I felt it detracted from the show but not to the point where it hinders it. Overall it's a good anime in my opinion - worth a watch.

Also recently watched Summer Wars which I also thought was pretty well done. The premise was pretty cool in my opinion, but I felt the story was weak in a few spots. I feel The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, also produced by Madhouse and directed by Mamoru Hosoda, is a better anime in comparison.

I'm not sure if I mentioned that I had finished Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica in the older thread, but I thought it was a pretty damn good series overall. I really sympathized with the two main characters. There's a word I'm looking for to describe this anime, but I cannot think of it right now. The way it is presented is really well done in my opinion.

Are there any other great series out there worth watching that are rather recent? Anything along the lines of Karas, Katanagatari, Bakemonogatari, Akira, Ninja Scroll, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowoboy Bebop, Code Geass, Bleach, Naruto, Death Note, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, School Rumble, FLCL, Ghost in the Shell, Outlaw Star, Trigun, Gurren-Lagann, Spirited Away, Casshern, and or Macross?

Edit: Added a title....

I just watched Mazinkaiser SKL. Pretty fun, but lighter on story than I'm used to seeing from a Go Nagai production. Sepcifically the ambiguious timeframe it takes place in, but then you can't get that caught up in stuff when there's super robot death porn action going on.

High School of the Dead is to fanservice what Gurren Lagann is to mecha anime. Just when you think they've outdone themselves, they add even more of it. I suppose it is pretty distracting if one is trying to focus on the whole "end of the world thing". I just kinda accepted that fanservice galore was comedic in value and scope and just ended up laughing about it. But that's just me. They actually put out a short OVA not so long ago and that one takes the fanservice even further.

I watched the original Mazinger back when I was a kid and loved it. I still remember the show as having some of the most outrageous robot designs ever (and there was a new one every week!).

I never watched Mazinkaiser or the films. Is it possible to watch Mazinkaiser SKL without watching them first?

Spring season 2011 has been one of the best in recent years, with loads of interesting titles. So far I've kept up to date with:

Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai: Show about a group of teenagers trying to complete one last wish for a childhoodfriend who has passed away. Not much wrong with this show except some minor plotholes, at times a bit too sentimental but not enough to be irritating (although it's rediculously long title certainly is).

C: The Money of Possibility and Soul Control: Early reports indicated this to be some sort of political thriller or social commentary on the financial sector, but it turned out to be 'pokemon for adults with money', which doesn’t really appeal to me. Would have dropped it if wasn’t for Kimimaro and Mashu. Don’t understand why this anime was included in the noitamina block.

Deadman Wonderland: A guilty pleasure. Over the top violence and rediculous plot involving a kid being framed for murdering his class. The prison he has been sent to is an amusement park that is a cover up for human experimenting. Characters are messed up in the head in a pleasant way, and the suspense is high enough to make me want to watch this show first thing every week.

Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko: Well, what can I say; the cute is strong in this one. Involving a high school girl that after a carcrash has become a shut-in who is convinced she is an alien. Her cousin tries to get her back to the real world. The concept could have been worked out better if the show hadn’t gone the easy route of relying on character promotion.

Dororon Enma-kun Meerameera: Best anime of the season by far, and it has received way too little attention. A strong adaption of Go Nagai's original hot blooded ecchi horror-comedy, it combines a retro feel, slick animation and a great soundtrack. It’s like a cross between Austin Powers and Panty and Stockings. Loaded with anime and pop culture references. Bring on the filth.

Hanasaku Iroha: J-drama meets P.A.Works. Great visuals and started off really strong but lost a bit of impact. Plot: Daughter is send to work for her grumpy grandmother who owns a Ryokan, after the girls mother has ran off with her new lover, leavin her to fend for herself. Still a nice show to watch and I am curious where it will lead.

Moshidora: Solid and slowly built up anime on a strange mix of management and baseball. Characters are unremarkable but it’s a heartwarming show with superb finale.

Nichijou: It took me time to get used to absurdist type of humor, but Nichijou slowly picked up steam. It has very high production values but still lacks a focal character to bring some structure to the randomnes. Think Azumanga Daoih meets Pany Pony Dash.

Showa Monogatari: Nice anime on family life in Japan in the 60s. Animation quality isn’t that great but an anime like this doesn’t need flashy graphics.

Stein’s Gate: Very interesting sci-fi story on time travel with quirky cast and impressive atmosphere.

Tiger and Bunny: Superhero buddy-cop show with power armors. The concept hasn’t really grabbed me but Kotetsu is a breath of fresh air when it comes to male protagonists in anime. We need more like him.

Yeah, SKL is pretty a pretty self contained "somewhere in some future maybe" story.

Turn A is sitting on my "to watch" list too. Are you enjoying it so far?

Finished Burst Angel. It's pretty entertaining...4/5 rating.

It does have a theme similar to Bubblegum Crisis with 4 girls fighting cybog mecha and taking place in future Tokyo after a great quake. Meg shoots two pistols like Revy in Black Lagoon. The CGI graphics of the cybots are a little rough from circa 2003. But the action is good.

I just found this title in a stack of DVDs that I haven't gone through in ages. I've never seen it. Oddly enough, I have about 300 anime titles at home, so I have a pretty extensive library.

I'm watching High School Rumble, Slayers (whole series from original to the last), and Megazone 23 (for project purposes) ;)

School Rumble is epic. I just wish someone would pick up 3rd Terrm. Hell, I'd love a good reason why the third season was never fully animated. But I'll take the ending anyday, no matter how angry it makes you

If only Harima wasn't so freakin' dence, he could have ended up with the blonde girl...

Burst Angel was a much better BGC knock-off than BGC 2040 was.

Watching Vandread. It has a couple of good ideas plotwise, but its not really blowing me away. The 2 main characters in particular are very uninteresting. And the CGI is very distracting to say the least.

My wife loves anime, but she's not much into the high school dramas. However, High School Rumble had her hooked. I really wish they would've wrapped it up, but I think I'm going to watch it over again. It's just too funny, and the opening/closing songs are just so damn catchy. I'm glad someone else enjoys this series.

School Rumble does have an ending, it just hasn't been licensed yet. Basically, the whole 3rd season of the story was skipped over, and the ending is persented in a 2 episode OVA. I'm not sure why they didn't animate the full last arc of the manga, but there are some very rewarding/anger making events that happen in that OVA.

Thanks to netflix I've begun watching some older anime starting with the original Dangaioh release from manga entertainmant. WORST AMERICAN RELEASE EVER!!!

Horribly painful dub only, no subtitles, poor picture quality, and the first episode is missing replaced by a 10 min prolog that is impossible to follow.

As for the show itself its okay. The fighters that make up Dangaioh look like underdeveloped valkyrie fetuses(Kawamori was the mech designer). The robot itself looks like someone just removed all the armor plates from Mazinger and called it a new robot. The character designs are definately what to expect from the classic 80s. I liked how the pilots themselves each had unique abilities almost to the point of me thinking this must be x-men meets getter robo. Also as far as endings go this one is pretty unique. I'm used to downer melancholy endings but...

The bad guys win! The series ends with "The Man They Call... Gil Berg!" getting congratulated for doing a job well done beating the good guys and leaving them dead in their cockpits floating in space.

To be honest I have to say I enjoyed Great Dangaioh alot better, even though it has 99.9% nothing to do with this show untill the last two episodes!!!

Hibiki's character develops slowly throughout the series. His character becomes more interesting in the second season. Dita is pretty much Dita, but she gets a rival in the second season which brings more drama. I like this series. I wish they had continued it beyond Second Stage. As for the CGI, it looks bland compared to today's standards.

yeah, I'm on the second season now and you're right about it being an improvement over the first. However I still feel that they had some really good ideas and backstory that are let down by some really weak characters. If they made Dita and Hibika just a tad more intelligent and with better dialogue, this could have been a really excellent series.

But I'll wait and see how it all plays out in the end. Only a couple of more episodes to go.

There is the Pokemon aspect, they skip battle scenes for conversations on monetary policy. It's like Keynes vs the Chicago School the anime.

And while I agree about Enma-kun, but I think you've got a serious case of nostalgia goggles filtering the new stuff.

There won't be a nick of difference if they replaced all the mecha parts in IS with glowing feathers and rainbow ponies summoned out of nowhere.

So, after putting it off for years and seeing something on the 'net to remind me of it, I'm acquiring what I can of Legend of Galactic Heroes. Give me a couple hours at least. I don't expect an official US release in my lifetime at least. I want to see what the show was about after hearing some good word about it on these boards a while back.

One thing's for sure, from seeing all the episodes, movies, etc. listed, I won't have a lack of things to watch for quite a while.

Edit to add: My God, I actually had to look up on Google a viewing order for this. But there seems to be a wide variety also on what order to view. Any suggestions?

My suggestion to you would be to ignore the chronological order found in wikipedia and go straight to the 110 episode OVA. One does not need any previous knowledge of the films or side stories to start up on it. And its the best of the lot.

Hope you enjoy it :D

The conversations on the financial system in C are little more then window dressing to give weight to the consequences of the game/financial district. It is not a bad show but, like the recent fractale or shiki, I don't see it fit with noitamina's non-otaku audience.

As for Enma-kun, you may be right, it is a nostalgia show after all, and the makers manage to strike the same tone as the original manga.

...No suggestions with the list I gave? Nothing worth watching? :(

The list you gave is rather diverse, but some good anime of the last three years or so in random order:

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Kara No Kyoukai: Garden of Sinners

Mushishi

Cross Game

Toradora

Angel Beats

Break Blade

Eve No Jinkan

Baccano!

Denno Coil

Seirei no Moribito

Natsume Yūjin-Chō

I started with the 1st movie, "My Conquest Is The Sea Of Stars." But I'll do as you suggest and actually start with the series then.

OMG Highschool of the DEAD, fanservice & gore that would make Gainax jealous!

I held off at Ep.7 for the time being. But yeah, those things are sprinkled liberally throughout the show

Nah, its ok. Conquest is a bit of a prequel to the series and came out some months before the series. And it serves as a bit of a "taster" for the rest. If you like this, you'll probably like the series. And it has the best use of Ravel's Bolero ever!

I just got lent Ah My Goddess season 1 from a friend who insists I should watch it. Just looking at the box and reading the content, it doesn't exactly seem like my kind of show (not really into show's that blend slice of life with magic/supernatural), but I'll give it a shot. Should at least be fun.
