Most up-to-date version of (still in-progress) translation guide HERE.

Photo-Translations of the game's menu screens are HERE.

I've gone ahead and set up a web-version of the guide, which should be easier to access (and navigate) than the GoogleDocs version. Here's the table of contents (just click on the links to access).

If you need to contact me directly email is usually the fastest way (mwulf.0079@gmail.com). However, if you're looking for basic advice/answers, you're probably better off posting your question here in this thread, so that other people can answer! (I'm not always the fastest option, ya' know?).

Original Post:

Hey, all. Been a while since I posted here. Anyway, I'm working on a translation guide for Macross 30 (in the same style as some of my previous guides--so lots of image translations). Some fine folks at GameFAQs suggested I ask around here for some help, as that whole "life" thing is pretty busy for me and, working on my own, it could take some time to finish everything. Particularly given how incomplete the Japanese Wiki for the game is.

I'm fairly busy with that whole "real life" thing right now, so on my own, it could take quite some time to assemble a decent guide. Therefore, I'd like to approach you fine people for aid. If you feel like helping me out--great--if not, that's fine, too. Here are the elements I'd currently like some help with:

  1. Description of evolution/upgrade mechanics (I've only had maybe 30 minutes to play the game today; toyed briefly with system, upgrading VF-0, but wasn't exactly sure how the process functioned--i.e., what variables were or were not affected; which items were better to use/not use; etc.).
  2. General item data.
  3. Brief synopsis of plot per chapter (Please PM me or email me mwulf.0079@gmail.com -- please do NOT post any content that could be considered a "spoiler" in this thread.
  4. General help with Japanese-to-game-mechanic literacy:
  • The stat in the pilot menu is "Tairyoku," which translates to "physical strength" -- but what does the stat actually effect, game-wise?

Man, I wish I had a capture device. As for the physical strength. Could it be for the Melee attacks with the triangle button?

I don't think so. The pilot stats are:

Strength(?)

Ranged Combat

Melee Combat

Defense

Speed

???

???

I haven't figured out the last two yet. The very last one I can't read, period (too low a resolution to make out the strokes) and I haven't found the first kanji in the second-to-last one in my dictionary yet.

I haven't messed with the game enough to really say too much about, well anything, but at the very bottom of the pilot screen there's a "growth settings" set of buttons... which might affect how stats are upgraded upon level up? I don't know, but you can select between things like "speed" and "defense" and "balanced," etc.

For those of you jumping into this thread hoping to see an actual translation guide, I hope to have the translation-images for most of the menus done tonight or tomorrow, and an early version of the guide up at GameFAQs by Friday.

Great, I'd really love a translation of the basic game menus, I'm getting far too old, grumpy, lack of patience, lack of time to sit and figure everything out through trial and error like I did in my younger days..........hahaha.

Many thanks!

My opinion on the Strength stat in this game might be like a Constitution perhaps? Already see Defense and Melee combat separate from the rest.

Still in diapers though gameplay wise

I'd like to help contribute what I can, but I'm curious, is there a way to take screenshots on a ps3?

My biggest thing right now is translating item names and quest requirements... I have several quests that all ask for the same exact thing, but even translating, I have no idea what they're asking for.

Yeah we need two separate threads

One for menu/quest/how to translations.

One for storyline.

And then attempt to stay on topic.
It's really bugging me in the other thread people are giving continual playthru spoilers interpersed with translations of the menus/quests or non-plot tips, even in the same post.

hey you guys http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/36091197 here the game play story ,I got the direct download for the videos .. I don't want to post it on here because is a membership thing, maybe it will help with the translation .. I can PM the direct download link to someone .. but I don't who I should send it to ... or tell you guys how to directly download it yourself .

Well, then maybe we should just keep this thread spoiler free, and if anyone feels like contributing to a summary, he or she can toss me a PM. I'll amend the opening post.

That's next on my list. Since a lot of that stuff is on the wiki, should be easy to translate. Thing is, wiki isn't complete, so it may take some time before item/quest information is finished.

EDIT:

Finished photo-translations. See first post.

WONDERFUL. Thank you!

As another idea that sometimes works for non native speakers...

I have an android phone. The app "Google Translate" lets you take a pic of text, you highlight it with your finger, and it translates it. Works fine unless the kanji are too small and blurry.

I'm gonna try adjusting the contrast/brightness and see if that helps the phone with dense kanji translations.

One of the biggest problems people have been having are the hunter guild side quests.

As far as I know (not much) they aren't directly associated with plot, so personally I don't think they would be considered spoilers.

And once again Zoroastres, you rock. (And double props for your LoGH fandom) Let me know if there is anything I can assist with. Sadly I can't take proper PS3 screenshots. I wish it wasn't so friggin hard to do.

Wow I wish I had that ability right now. I only know five Kanji and all Hiragana and Katakana which pretty easy to learn. Anyways would a scan of the game manual help in some way?

I actually got a Robot Damashii Tallgeese in the mail today... really had a strong "So that's what it is!" moment. I tried looking it up at least a dozen times in my Nelson's to no result. Really annoying, that one.

...

Anyway, as I've said before, I don't really have a lot of time to play the game myself. This means most of the translation stuff I'm doing won't be from my own game, but from the Japanese wiki. Which is... very incomplete.

Right now, for example, it has ZERO information on any of the sidequests.

In class today I had some spare time (thanks to an insipid discussion resulting from poor reading comprehension and general ignorance of 11th century social and religious dynamics) so I went ahead and made a translation table for all of the items... from the information in the wiki, which is pretty incomplete.

Due to how incomplete it is, I probably won't include it in any version of the FAQ (Because, due to GameFAQs being terrible, will have to be actual screenshots of tables) but I am exploring the idea of putting it up as a GoogleDoc. I've never messed with GoogleDocs before, but I -think- you can set up files that anyone could edit. That might be helpful.

Since the Japanese wiki has no side-quest information, I guess that's the one thing I need the most here. So if anyone can help out with that....

Otherwise, I'll just have to wait for the Japanese wiki to update. I'll be doing most of my work on the guide on-campus, but maybe I can get an hour or two to play the game this weekend.

Thank you very much!!

Side note: the critical hits also work with Control Type A, as long as you don't have a fixed lock to something else.

Things that I have learned:

Item management:

  • If your inventory is full - 30/30 item types, you might lose out on quest rewards. (Possibly goes to storage, need to confirm)
  • If you have the max you can carry of an item, ( 1 steak, 10 repair kits, 10 ammo BOX) the number will turn orange.
  • If you pass by a item pick up (glowy sparkle pillar) and you see red text, you are at max for that item. If it's food or a repair kit, use what you have, then pick the item up.
  • You can access your item storage from the hangar; it's very simple to use.
  • Put ALL Valkyrie parts in your storage. There is no benefit to having them in your inventory. When building they are just as easiliy accessable in storage as in your inventory.

Many many of the items are food. (Useable items = Square with a ! )
Ouruboros Burger,

Ouruboros Steak,

Pine Salad,

Pine Cake

An Octagon slightly vertically streched seems to be a non-usuable stat bonus; a "Lucky charm"
Leon's Pendant, Alto's Earring, ect

(Going to work on this more later....)

Remember to continue to aim while you are locked on!
Gunpods have lots of upwards kick, so aim slightly down with continued fire.
Lead your targets left/right/up/down when they are moving perpendicular. When they change direction, unlock, then lock again to re-center on them, then lead the other way.

You know, that might be the case. I just checked that it wasn't in my Inv.

Thank you so much for these translations! On a vain note, I know you can switch between 1 of 4 paint schemes for your Valkyrie, is there a way to customize these paint schemes?

No. It's just another awesome element of the older games they've decided to do away with.

----------------------------------

Mishima's Mushroom (Speed)

三島産キノコ(速度)

+Speed

----------------------------------

Wait, wait wait. They actually included a powerup named after Leon's hairstyle? Please tell me that's what all those little mushroom shaped items I get are. Ok, yeah, sadly not knowing Japanese really means you miss out on a lot of the humor in the game.

Also, a ton of complexity.. I had absolutely no idea they went so far as to introduce things like grenades and proximity mines here. I don't know if I can think of a place where they would be useful, given how fast paced the combat generally is, but that's more depth than I expected. The little warp/revive items would be helpful though.

As far as quest items go, sometimes, when you see those blue sparkly spots, they contain guild quest items, and you have to have room for them.. but other times, they're part of a game-wide collection set, and go directly into your storage, into the same spot as your blueprints. The far right tab in your hangar storage is devoted to one-time items, like blueprints, and those collection set items.

Certain guild quests ask you to find a set of specific items. These are sometimes found in the gold sparkly spots, sometimes in the blue ones, and sometimes in chests. The gold ones sometimes actually respawn, allowing you to collect more of the item from the same region if you keep running around in circles.

Now the weirdness people should be made aware of. I finished my first run and started a new game plus last night, with the goal of doing as many side quests as I possibly can, and maybe making a guide to them. Well.. cue my frustration when one of those quests with the big green "LOOK HERE" region that appears on the map tells me to collect 5 items.. but I only find 3 chests there.

As it turned out, I never finished the quest on my first run. I found the other two in my storage. Yep. Starting a new game plus does not reset quest related items. If you have an unfinished quest when you start over, you'll keep the items you have collected, but lose the quest itself.

It also might mean that quests are meant to be completed only once per game file, even if you start over. I'm not sure about this though.

Fortunately, I don't think I've actually seen any time when a quest asked for drops from a target. I know you get a variety of colored orbs from kills, mostly in the way of crafting materials and money, but I don't think I've ever gotten quest items that way. Anything that requires you to kill something is just a hunting quest to kill a certain number of them.

Anyway, my current plan is to burn through this second run and unlock what I can in the way of aircraft, sell off ALL of my quest related items for cash, and start fresh to see if I can make a sidequest guide.

I should say though.. some common quest items are actually extremely plentiful. I noticed at one point that it wouldn't let me deposit a stack of 72 items I'd picked up. So, I look in my storage, and realized I already had 255 of them. So yeah, that means two things.. the max of an item stored is 255.. and the game likely is written at least partly using hexidecimal.

Bottom line with the gold sparkly spots is that they seem to be a good source of cash and ammo if you obsessively collect them. Don't ever sell off any valk parts (unless you hit 255 of them), because you'll need those, but any item that gets deposited into (I think) the second to last tab in your storage seems to be only related to side quests.

Oh, quick separate post to point out workings for the guild quests.

You get three types of guild quests (that I've seen so far), using purple, red, and green icons.

Purple ones are basically missions to fight someone. You'll get a small green dot on the map, indicating where the quest is, and when you get there, you find a big sparkly blue exclamation point. Getting close to it will let you ativate it with the triangle button, and you'll start the fight.

Red icons appear to be simple hunting quests, asking you to kill a certain number of something. Most of the names I've seen for these are in katakana (if they aren't outright telling you to kill a specific VF type), and aren't too hard to translate. Finding the thing to kill might be another story entirely though. I spent the better part of chapter 8 looking for bandits to kill, but gave up.

Green icons can be weird in a couple ways... a lot of times, you're asked to collect a single item. When this happens, it's usually one of the blue sparkly spots, and sometimes will be right near the guild site that issues the quest. Other times, you'll get a big green quest icon on the map that points to a region to look for the item. Still other times, you might not get any indicator of where to look at all. I have a lot of that third type, and they're driving me insane.

Green quests might ask you to gather a bunch of a common drop that appears in the gold sparkly spots as well, and you may or may not get a map icon to highlight where to look for them. If you get a combination of a single quest item with several common items, you'll likely find the common ones in the same area as the single item, but I can't guarantee it.

Hope that's semi-helpful to someone. I admit, on my first run, I only paid attention to any quests that gave out blueprints, so I skipped a lot. It might take me another run, but I want to go through and complete them all now.

Edit: Maybe this was the wrong place to put this.. might've gone better in the tips/tricks thread, since it isn't actually translating anything. I can't do much actual translation at the moment, but I hope to pour over the guild quests and make a mini-guide to them soon.

Thank you very much Chronicidal!

One of the few times that I went into the Guild Quests, I am under the impression that I cleared a mission without doing anything. I was supposed to destroy or acquire something, but I selected something else in the menu and somehow I got the quest cleared so maybe that's an option with items you already have. I'll try to replicate this weekend what I did before, to see if it works again.

All right, I think I've finally figured out GoogleDocs. I think. Here is the full set of item translation tables:

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B6r3Sy1LnkpxZUZDUU91NmY0Z0k/edit?usp=sharing

Everyone should be able to view it. Let me know if you cannot. No, it's not complete for the game, but it is a complete translation of everything on the wiki. I know I found some stuff in the game, myself, that wasn't on the wiki, so right now I'm going to take the few hours I've got before class to hunt down some blueprint locations.

Thanks again for your contributions.

Would you (or anybody really) be able to translate some of the button combos? I remember how to do special attacks and what not on the PSP control scheme, but I'm at a loss on Type-C. In particular I remember there being a button combo you could press to close-in on your enemy (big boost directly towards your current target) but I can't seem to figure it out. It's a really helpful maneuver in battroid mode.
