  1. Past hour
  2. Did you manage to get an order in for Revan @Scyla or didn’t even bother to?
  3. I'm sick and slept through today's announcements. I managed to pre-order the three United Deluxes, but Vector Prime sold out at both pulse and Amazon. I assume the Studio Series stuff was in the space bridge? No preorders I need to worry about?
  4. To be honest, yeah... I'm inclined to agree. If the setting is underdeveloped to the point that the answer to "why are things like this?" is "just don't think about it" or "it has been left as an exercise for the viewer", that often means the rest of the writing is going to be similarly lacking. Not always, but often enough to be a pretty reliable indicator of quality. After watching the first episode, I definitely feel like Fallout expects me to already be familiar with the setting from the games and I definitely feel like I'm missing some critical context and/or knowledge. Given that the whole streaming race is driven by visual quality above all else, it's a safe bet Amazon will spend big to make Cavill's Warhammer 40,000 series look every bit as nice as Fallout. What Cavill's project will end up spending that money on is anyone's guess, since we don't know if he's adapting an existing story or developing an original one, or what the focus of the story will be. It's a really big setting with a LOT of options, and quite a few of the most celebrated candidates for adaptation are devoid of things like powered armor.
  5. Seems they're building up hype for May 9th and going to actually reveal things at a webcast during Shizuoka Hobby Show weekend
  6. Today
  7. I think I'm only getting Steeljaw, Springer, and Bumblebee.
  8. To the best of my recollection, Clavell doesn't depict warfare in any of his novels. That's simply not what they're about.
  9. I didn't see Wolverine in the cowl, I've seen promo art and merch, but no actual shots in the movie itself. I hope it doesn't get thrown away really quickly, the suit is fantastic don't get me wrong, but I want Hugh with that damn cowl on.
  10. For better or worse, it's a world where the "nuclear" family and society of the 50s and 60s never ended, things advanced technologically like our world, but nuclear powered. We don't see much of other countries in Fallout, the games are always based in the US, but the little bits we do get tend to reveal the rest of the world mostly tried to continue on as normal, but the Fallout universes Cold War became a whole different beast, and the US and China became too powerful too quickly to not dictate the cultural development of the rest of the world to a fairly large degree. Beyond that....
  11. Damn that looks really good! Now the real question, will Bandai even bother with Shimo and Skar King? I pre-ordered the Hiya Shimo but will gladly cancel and jump over to Bandai if they announce one themselves.
  12. Yeah, I think this more had to do with Clavell not actually familiar with Feudal Japanese warfare. Like most just used textual examples like him at military meeting or lecturing with battle plans rather than specifics.
  13. As someone who has read the book twice and has seen the original miniseries probably 10 times over the past 30 years, I'm glad it ended the way it did. They did a really excellent job with the new miniseries, with my only quibble being that Blackthorne doesn't come across as inquisitive (or perhaps intelligent) as the character should be. But, maybe I'm wrong on this and I just need to do a rewatch.
  14. Might the announcement of Steeljaw also hint at a possible new Ravage with upcoming SS86 Soundwave? Credit where credit is due; they did include one with Netflix Soundwave, and the Bumblebee core Ravage does make for a decent stand-in, from a distance.
  15. All I want out of today's announcements are Steeljaw and possibly SS86 Springer, although I think the Siege toy is pretty well done so I'm not sure I need a partial retool of an already good take. I wish they'd actually shown Steeljaw; the cassettes are a particular favorite subset of TFs for me and I really hope Steeljaw is well done. Given the precedents, I'm not holding my breath. I can hope though. Looks like they're taking a break from more Animated or Prime figs. Ah well, more money in my pocket for now.
  16. Captain's log: Thurday, April 25, 2024. Work on the 1/48 TANKU-ROBO has begun and is off to an excellent start. I had actually done some drafting a couple of months ago on my private time, just to see if there were any irreconcilable geometry problems. My biggest concern was for the Sniping Clapper mode, hereafter Transport mode because many renderings had an absurdly thick and clumsy profile: nowhere near the more flat and uniform appearance we see in the animation. Either there was a significant problem in the fundamental geometry, or these guys weren't trying very hard. I'm happy to tell you it's the latter, but with a caveat. I was able to get a flatter profile because I opted to incorporate collapsing panels in strategic areas. That is to say, certain modules are hinged and can be made more compact in certain modes. This is actually quite feasible in a toy like the old Matchbox Hovertank because it's large and offers more breathing room for screws, joint reinforcements, etc. In 1/48 scale, the geometry is still sound, but due to the smaller size, sturdiness and playability would be greatly sacrificed: bad news for toy designers, but not a factor for a display model! As you can see in images 1-4, I was able to get Transport mode very flat and elegant without sacrificing the other modes, and without cheating! 004.HEIC003.HEIC002.HEIC001.HEIC With the drafting process now largely done, I can begin proper construction. Pic 05 shows the basics: a pile of modelling board chunks, some analog calipers, a ruler, and of course the plots. 005.HEIC Pic 06: I need to cut some of the modelling board into more manageable pieces, so under the band saw it goes. 006.HEIC Pic 07: with every cut of the band saw comes a rough, uneven texture left by the blade, so those pieces are then milled flat. 07.HEIC Pic 08: in order to achieve precise results, precision must be maintained at every step of the construction process. If I allowed deviation to occur at this early stage, the end result would be a sloppy, irregular mess! 008.HEIC Pic 09: now that I have a few decent blocks to work with, I begin the tedious process of cutting out my paper patterns, which will guide my construction. 009.HEIC Pic 10: as a bonus, I thought I'd show you some of the cutting tools I use on the milling machine. On the far left is the faced-end mill: I use this for creating flats over larger surfaces. It does the same work as a regular mill shank (second-from-the-left) but does it much quicker. Then comes a large bull-nose cutter. The many cutting edges denote this to be used for fine cutting. It differs from the smaller bull-nose flute in that despite being small, it has fewer knife edges, meaning it can remove more material more quickly. The last two are smaller, square end cutters which I use for detailing. Sometimes removing too much excess material can cause a part to crack, so these are used for fine work in sensitive areas. 010.HEIC Pic 11: with certain blocks which are too thin and awkward to hold in the milling vise, I use my trusty drill press with a sharpening stone as an improvised end-mill. When using this method, I usually only have to remove a millimeter or less, and it does so very effectively, with the drawback being lots of fine dust. 011.HEIC That covers the progress for this week. Things should start getting more interesting in the next update, when you'll start to see some (almost) recognizable shapes, so stay tuned!
  17. She has that "Calgon take me away" away look, except it's Megatron.
  18. Yeah, this and the XTB Cosmos were the two 3P figures I HAD to own when I started getting into 3P. Not sure anything tops those.
