Original Macross voted most popular ‘idol anime.’

Niconico recently surveyed 500 of its users about popular ‘idol anime’ and the results (released on Jan. 11) might surprise you.

While currently popular shows such as ‘Love Live’ made it into the top five, as did the Shoji Kawamori co-directed series ‘AKB 0048’, the No. 1 spot went to SDF Macross, with almost an entire 8% between it and the No.2 spot, ‘Magic Angel Creamy Mami.’

This isn’t the more recently popular Macross Frontier we are talking about here, nor the very influential Macross 7. No, it was the original tv series from 1982 that 19.2% of fans voted for, proving that the voice that changed the course of Space War 1 still has a hold over us more than 30 years later.

Macross The First Returns

First picked up on by forum user Peter, and later confirmed by forum user Antibiotictab, MACROSS THE FIRST will be returning in digital format.

Kadokawa’s newly launched digital manga service COMIC WALKER will host the manga by famed Macross character designer Haruhiko Mikimoto, from late April. The Japanese version of the digital service posted late last night that it would run ‘the previously unknown Episode 0 , greatly expanded and with an increased number of colour insert pages. While it has yet to be announced whether the Comic Walker version will start from where the print version ended or rerun the entire series, the fact that there is an Episode 0 seems to indicate that the manga will be rerun from scratch, meaning it could still be a few months until the digital version catches up to where the original print version left off.

Oshare Macross Store – 02/01-02/22

The latest in the series of temporary ‘Oshare Macross’ stores opened at Shinjuku Marui Annex today.

With a decidedly Valentine’s Day theme, this new Oshare Macross also featured a sneak peek at the packaging for the upcoming Macross Frontier movies Bluray box set (with the art for the extras disc being a temporary placeholder), some new Sheryl and Ranka art (art-cards & tapestries), Macross-themed cakes and cookies, and even a hidden Hidetaka Tenkin-signed valkyrie. Oh, and the Decul-CHA (Cha = tea) pun was finally taken to it’s logical extreme with the introduction of Macross Frontier-branded tea.

Oshare Macross will be held from Feb. 01 to Feb. 22 on the 6F of Shinkuku Marui Annex.

Macross Concier

Beginning June 3rd, Docomo smartphones will be offering a new service called ‘Macross Concier.’

Basically, this provides the subscriber with their choice of a Sheryl or Ranka voice for their smartphones equivalent of Siri. This appears to be the same basic tech that was used for the Misato Kusanagi news service that used to be offered on the Japanese Playstation Network.
